The long-running science fiction television series has now made an announcement that will make fans of reality television ecstatic. According to Variety, Ru Paul’s Drag Race alumni Jinkx Monsoon will be joining the Doctor Who franchise.
Showrunner Russell T Davies certainly seems excited to be adding Monsoon, stating in his announcement that “in a galaxy of comets and supernovas,” Monsoon was the “biggest star of all,” before adding that “Doctor Who will never be the same again.” For their part, Monsoon relayed that they are “honored, thrilled, and utterly excited” to be joining Doctor Who, calling Russell T Davies “a visionary” and “brilliant writer.”
With both Jinkx Monsoon and Russell T Davies confirming the addition to Doctor Who, Monsoon seems poised to share their talents with a broader audience. Fans are still wondering how Monsoon will be involved and what role they will take on within the franchise. The announcement mentions that it will be a major role, so many fans are excited to see whether or not Monsoon will be playing one of The Doctor’s latest companions.
For those unfamiliar with the future Doctor Who star, Jinkx Monsoon is an acclaimed performer familiar with gracing televisions with their presence. Doctor Who will return to television in November 2023, kicking things off with a three-episode 60th anniversary special with former Doctor David Tennant and series lead Catherine Tate reprising their roles for the three episodes. It’s very possible that Jinkx Monsoon could appear somewhere in this special, although since there is still some mystery around their character, fans may have to wait a bit longer.
After the special, Doctor Who will be taken over by none other than Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa. The Rwandan-Scottish actor will be the 15th Doctor in control of the TARDIS, taking over for David Tennant. Gatwa is rumored to be playing the first openly gay iteration of The Doctor, and with the addition of Jinkx Monsoon, the upcoming season promises a historic level of LGBTQ representation for the show.
