Less than a week after its highly anticipated release on Disney+, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has already broken a franchise record. According to data from Samba TVDoctor Strange 2 was watched by 2.1 million U.S households in the first five days, making it Marvel’s most successful streaming release. One of the studio’s other superhero offering, Eternals, now holds second place with two million local households in a comparative time period. The figure does not factor in global viewership which would probably have been much larger.

These numbers are even more impressive since the Obi-Wan Kenobi finale debuted on the same day. Samba TV says the five-day viewership number for the sixth and final episode of the Star Wars spin-off was 1.8 million households. This means a lot of the same people tuned in for Doctor Strange 2 and the Ewan McGregor-led series. Interestingly, the Kenobi finale outperformed the finale of its Star Wars predecessor, The Book of Boba Fett by 20%. But Obi-Wan Kenobi wasn’t strong enough with the Force to take on the powerful sorcerer.

This isn’t the first record Doctor Strange 2 has broken on the Disney+ platform. The movie garnered a 14+ age rating in the United Kingdom. While that might not seem high, it is the most mature rating for a Marvel Studios project on the service. Every other film, from Iron Man to Eternals was given a 12+, according to The Direct. People who have seen the film probably aren’t surprised by the rating. The brutal deaths of the Illuminati coupled with some horrific imagery made for some pretty intense viewing. While not suitable for young kids, some may even wonder why it wasn’t graded higher.

While the overall consensus from critics and fans has been a little mixed, that hasn’t stopped Doctor Strange 2 from being a massive box office success. Fans are still heading to cinemas to experience the mind-bending adventure on the big screen. After being in theaters for eight weeks, the film was still able to rake in $1.7 million domestically, according to Movie Web. On July 26th, it will be released by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment on Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD. These versions contain audio commentary, deleted scenes, a gag reel, and various behind-the-scenes featurettes.

Doctor Strange 2 is directed by Sam Raimi from a script by Michael Waldron. Set a few months after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the story follows Doctor Stephen Strange as he continues to discover the secrets of the Magic. But his work is threatened when he has to protect America Chavez, a teenager capable of traveling the multiverse, from The Scarlett Witch.

Starring alongside Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff / The Scarlet Witch is Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Benedict Wong as Wong, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo. Xochitl Gomez makes her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as America Chavez. Michael Stuhlbarg also appears in Doctor Strange 2 as Nicodemus West.
