Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is absolutely crushing the box office right now. The film opened to a massive $260 million opening in international markets. That is not to mention that the film achieving that huge international opening record only sits behind three other MCU films. Doctor Strange 2 now has the 4th best international opening behind Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. The numbers for the film certainly paint a picture that Marvel-produced films are alive and well.
Doctor Strange 2 may have been banned in other markets due to the character America Chavez being labeled as part of the LBGT community, but that does not matter, as the film is currently tearing up the charts. So far, per Box Office Mojo, the film is sitting at over $449 million worldwide. That is monstrous in nature, considering the film has only been out for less than a week. This could be the film that might be able to catch up to the monster success that the most recent Spider-Man has seen. That is just speculation and lofty goals, but the film has almost achieved half a billion dollars in less than a week’s time.
Doctor Strange 2 stars Benedict Cumberbatch as he returns to the MCU as Steven Strange aka Doctor Strange. If you have not seen Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, look away, as the rest of the article contains heavy spoilers. Strange is now feeling the effects of having been blipped away and the fallout from the Avengers winning against their most dangerous foe, Thanos. Strange must now find a way to correct his life again until he meets an unlikely girl who can traverse the multiverse. That is America Chavez, who has the power to literally travel through space and time. However, a deadly force is after her to harness her powers. That is none other than the Scarlet Witch. Now Strange must battle the most powerful being in the MCU, or so it seems. Sam Raimi certainly did not spare the horror elements for this excitable sequel.
Doctor Strange 2 is lighting up the box office for reasons that likely pertain to the style that Sam Raimi brought with this new iteration. While some might not agree with the style that has been taken with this new MCU film, it is still interesting that Marvel allowed such a wild style to happen at all. Not that they are not used to taking chances. Spider-Man: No Way Home was extremely ambitious, but that certainly worked out. The new Doctor Strange is just another example of Marvel taking a risk and nailing it.
Doctor Strange 2 is currently in theaters, and it is certainly a different kind of MCU film that might divide fans, but nearly reaching $500 million in total box office numbers tells a story that almost everyone is enjoying the film. There are plenty of cameos and easter eggs to satisfy the deepest Marvel fans. Check out the movie now, and see why it is being talked about as one of the best in the franchise.
