The Disney+ Robin Williams Classic Everyone Needs To See
Robin Williams was responsible for shaping the childhoods of many kids who watched Disney films throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. One of his greatest and most underrated performances can be seen in the 1991 fantasy adventure film, adapted from Scottish novelist J.M. Barrie’s 1911 book Peter and Wendy.
The film serves as a modern retelling of Peter Pan, bringing the timeless classic up to date for a new generation of families, with an unbeatable ensemble cast.
Hook On Disney+
Hook is currently available to stream on Disney+, for those who have not yet had the pleasure of seeing the film, as well as those who haven’t revisited the movie since its release.
Steven Spielberg directed the cult classic movie and features compositions from the legendary John Williams. Hook touts an incredible ensemble cast of A-listers including Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Julia Roberts, Bob Hoskins, Dante Basco, Caroline Goodall, and even a cameo appearance from legendary musician Phil Collins.
Steven Spielberg’s Vision
Steven Spielberg apparently dreamed of making Hook ever since he was a child, as his mother would read Barrie’s Peter and Wendy to him as a bedtime story.
Spielberg has expressed a deep resonance with the source material, even going so far as to label himself as a victim of Peter Pan Syndrome.
After passing the script and story around for years and shopping the film to several major studios, Spielberg was finally allowed to bring his vision to life in 1991.
Adult Peter Pan
The film centers on an adult Peter Pan, who has grown up and forgotten about his childhood. Having completely lost the magic from his youth, Peter is a distant workaholic who frequently ignores his family in favor of financial obligations.
That is, until his old nemesis Captain Hook hatches a plan to kidnap his children and bring them to the fantasy world of Neverland.
Hook Story
In search of his children, Peter agrees to venture into the distant world, guided by Tinker Bell, and seeks training from his band of misfit children the Lost Boys.
Though the Lost Boys are at first mired with trepidation at Peter’s newfound position as an old and weak adult and his inability to recall his past, they agree to reignite his imaginative powers in order to defeat Hook and save his family.
As Peter trains for the fight of a lifetime, Hook plots to turn his children against him, forcing Peter to reconcile with his failures as a father.
Mixed Reviews
Despite the film being hailed as a cult classic, Hook received mixed reviews from critics. The film holds a meager 29 percent critical score on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience score sits at a much higher 76 percent.
Though the film received critiques about its story and tone, the performances of both Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman were universally praised.
