Disney Is Rebooting A Classic Movie About Strippers, See The Video
The Full Monty is the latest film to get a sequel series.
It appears Hollywood really can reboot anything. Deadline reported the release of a new trailer for The Full Monty, a series continuing the 1997 British stripper comedy of the same name. The series is set to debut on FX and Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally on June 14, 2023.
The Full Monty (1997) told the story of six men in the town of Sheffield, England, who fall on hard times after losing their jobs at a steel mill. To make ends meet, the group forms a male stripping act that would rival all others; they will perform The Full Monty – full male nudity.
The movie is far less raunchy than its name implies. This offbeat comedy actually gets by on subtlety and substance more than most, and it manages to do so without becoming overly sentimental.
Powered by an eye-popping premise, big laughs, and a bigger heart, The Full Monty was a small film that made big waves. From a meager budget of $3.5 million, the film amassed $250 million worldwide. It was nominated for four Oscars, winning one, and even toppled Jurassic Park as the highest-grossing film in the UK.
25 years after the film’s box office breakout, The Full Monty cast is back to reprise their characters, including actors Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, and Lesley Sharp. Actress Talitha Wing joins the cast as Destiny, the teenage daughter of the original film’s protagonist, Gaz, played by Carlyle.
Gaz’s struggle to connect with Destiny looks to be a major throughline of the show’s eight-episode run. Still set in the evolving town of Sheffield, The Full Monty (2023) looks to explore the lives of the original film’s characters after they went back to regular life, examining the degradation of Sheffield’s healthcare, education, and job market from a personal, human perspective.
The original screenwriter of The Full Monty, Simon Beaufoy, is back to pen the project, along with co-writer Alice Nutter. Beaufoy is best known as the screenwriter behind Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
The new series will stand on the shoulders of a British cinema giant. The British Film Institute listed The Full Monty as the 25th best British film of the 20th century. The film has also been noted for its open-armed inclusion of a gay love story.
Critically and financially, The Full Monty was the little British indie that could. The film profited more than enough to warrant a sequel, and that follow-up is finally on the way. The new series looks to be a fun, heartwarming continuation that finds the beloved characters of the original in a new stage of life.
The men continue their struggle to find purpose, connect with the younger generation, and invigorate the sleepy town of Sheffield in a meaningful way. Stories that stare down societal issues with unwavering optimism have power in an increasingly cynical world. The Full Monty may not be the sequel anyone asked for, but it just might be the one TV fans need.
