Dexter: Original Sin Prequel Casts Leads Including Fan-Favorite Mr. Robot Actor
Dexter: Original Sin has announced its cast for the Morgan family. Patrick Gibson (Shadow and Bone) will play a young Dexter Morgan, Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) will portray Dexter’s father, Harry Morgan, and Molly Brown (Senior Year) will play Dexter’s younger sister, Debra Morgan. The series will be available via Paramount+ with Showtime.
Dexter: Original Sin
Dexter: Original Sin is set in 1991 Miami and follows a young Dexter Morgan. As a student transforming into a serial killer in training, Dexter starts to struggle with his violent urges. Dexter’s father, Harry, his only confidant, teaches him a code to target and kill only those who deserve it while avoiding law enforcement. Things become challenging when Dexter starts interning at the Miami Police Department.

The original Dexter series aired on Showtime from 2006 to 2013. The crime drama follows Dexter Morgan, a forensic blood spatter analyst with the Miami Metro Police Department.
He leads a double life as a vigilante serial killer. The series is based on the Jeff Lindsay novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter and was developed for television by James Manos Jr.
Dexter (Michael C. Hall) channels his homicidal urges into killing murderers who have escaped justice. Raised by his adoptive father, Harry Morgan (James Remar), who recognized his son’s violent tendencies early on, Dexter follows a strict moral code known as “The Code of Harry,” which ensures he only targets those who deserve it. His sister, Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter), is also a central character.
Dexter Was A Hit
The series, on which Dexter: Original Sin is based, received critical acclaim for its writing, originality and the moral ambiguity of its protagonist. Dexter was a ratings success for Showtime, contributing significantly to the network’s growth during its original run. The fourth season finale, which wrapped up Trinity Killer arc, attracted 2.6 million viewers, the series’ highest-rated episode at the time.
Dexter: New Blood
The final season also performed well, with the series finale drawing 2.8 million viewers, which Dexter: Original Sin would likely want to replicate. At the time, it became Showtime’s most-watched original series episode ever. The series was revived in 2021 with Dexter: New Blood, which aimed to provide a more conclusive ending to the story after the original series finale received mixed reviews.
Dexter: New Blood received a better reception, offering a darker and more introspective look at Dexter’s character and legacy. It will be interesting to see if the new offering in the franchise, Dexter: Original Sin, will match the success of the flagship series.
The People Behind The Scenes
Clyde Phillips, who worked on the original Dexter series, will return as the showrunner and executive producer for the 10-episode prequel, which takes place 15 years before the events of the flagship show.
Other executive producers on Dexter: Original Sin include Scott Reynolds, Michael C. Hall, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, and Lilly Burns, with Robert Lloyd Lewis as producer.
Gary Levine and Urooj Sharif will oversee the creative aspects of Dexter: Original Sin for Showtime Studios, with production supervised by Tara Power.
Paramount Global Content Distribution will distribute the project outside of Paramount+ markets. Michael Lehmann, who directed Christian Slater in the 1989 film Heathers, will serve as the directing executive producer.
