Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel is uninjured after successfully breaking up a knife fight in South Australia. The scary incident occurred when an argument between a man and woman turned violent outside a convenience store. The man was eventually stabbed in the chest but is expected to survive. According to local 7News, the attack was not random as the pair knew each other. The woman was charged with aggravated assault causing harm and has been refused bail.

Fortunately, the British actor, who lives in Australia, bravely put an end to the altercation before anyone was killed. In a statement, representatives for The Green Knight star confirmed his involvement in the incident saying that Dev Patel and his friends witnessed a fight that was already in progress. “Dev acted on his natural instinct to try and de-escalate the situation and break up the fight,” the persona said via Variety.

Thankfully, the group was successful in doing so and remained on site to ensure that police and medical help arrived. The statement from Dev Patel’s team also stressed that there are no heroes in this situation. And sadly this specific incident highlights a larger systemic issue of marginalized members of society not being treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. As such, the actor hopes that the same level of attention this story is receiving can be a catalyst for lawmakers to be compassionate in determining long-term solutions to help the community at large.

Dev Patel has been on a small acting hiatus since leading David Lowery’s acclaimed indie fantasy The Green Knight. The 2021 film is adapted from the 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The story follows Gawain, a nephew of King Arthur, who sets out on a journey to test his courage and face the Green Knight. The project received critical acclaim for its cinematography, music, acting, production value, and Lowery’s originality, direction, and writing. It also earned over $18 million against a budget of $15 million.

Now, one of his upcoming projects will see the actor taking the reins behind the camera as well. Dev Patel directs and stars in the Netflix-backed Monkey Man which is currently in post-production. He’s also set to appear opposite Benedict Cumberbatch and Ralph Fiennes in The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. Billed as an adventure comedy, the film is written and directed by Wes Anderson. It is based on the eponymous short story from the collection of short stories The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More by Roald Dahl. The film also stars Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend, and Richard Ayoade. It is scheduled to be released on Netflix.

Dev Patel first received international recognition for his breakout role in 2008’s film Slumdog Millionaire. The story centered on a Mumbai teenager who reflects on his life after being accused of cheating on a Who Wants to be a Millionaire spinoff. The film won eight Oscars at the Academy Awards, including the coveted trophy for Best Motion Picture of the Year. Since then he has starred in several Hollywood blockbusters like Hotel Mumbai, Lion, Chappie, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and The Personal History of David Copperfield.
