The first look features leading actors Denzel Washington as the leading role and Frances McDormand as his wife. The black and white picture gives an intimate look at the two stars in the Shakespearian film.
This marks a rare solo directing job for Joel Coen, who often collaborates with his brother Ethan Coen. He does often collaborate with his wife, Frances McDormand. So, there will be familiarity for the filmmaker in his star-studded film with actors like Denzel Washington leading the way. His only other time solo directing was 2001’s The Man Who Wasn’t There starring Billy Bob Thorton (Sling Blade), Frances McDormand, Michael Badalucco (O Brother, Where Art Thou?), James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), Joe Polito (The Big Lebowski), Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers), Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under), and Tony Shalhoub (Monk).
Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand will be met with a wide roster of co-stars for the William Shakespeare adaptation. Joining them will be Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges), Harry Melling (The Queen’s Gambit), Ralph Ineson (The Witch), and Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton).
Outside of A-listers like Denzel Washington, the film will be produced by Robert Graf, Joel Coen, and his long-time collaborator Catherine Farrell. Farrell has worked with the Coen brothers as a producer and occasionally a production manager on acclaimed movies like No Country for Old Men, True Grit, and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
The non-profit organization behind the film festival, Film at Lincoln Center, will show the Denzel Washington starring movie at the Alice Tully Hall on September 24, which is being released by Apple and A24.
Due to COVID-19, the New York Film Festival went all digital last year. This year will be in person for the event, which runs from September 24 to October 10. Attendees will get to enjoy the big screen seeing Denzel Washington as Lord Macbeth. It will abide by state mandates for safety and require both staff and attendees to wear masks at all times unless eating food.
The Tragedy of Macbeth is the second movie for Denzel Washington. Earlier this year, he was in the crime drama The Little Things. It was directed and written by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side). He was joined by co-stars Rami Malek (Mr. Robot), Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club), Chris Bauer (True Blood), Michael Hyatt (Nightcrawler), Terry Kinney (Billions), and Natalie Morales (Parks and Recreation).
Denzel Washington is not the only one coming off something hot recently. Frances McDormand was in the Oscar-winning movie Nomadland. Chloe Zhao’s film, which follows Frances McDormand as a woman traveling across the United States after the great recession of 2008, won three awards at the 93rd Academy Awards. One for Best Picture, Achievement in Directing, and Best Performance for an actress. It makes this McDormand’s third win in this category as she won for 2017’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and 1996’s Fargo.
