Lionsgate Studio has released another teaser for American Underdog. The film is a biographical sports drama about National Football League (NFL) quarterback Kurt Warner. It stars Dennis Quaid as St. Louis Rams head coach Dick Vermeil, alongside Zachary Levi as Warner and Anna Paquin as his wife Brenda.
The first trailer begins with the wise words of Coach Dick Vermeil (Dennis Quaid). “Destiny belongs to the underdogs,” he tells Warner as the two-minute clip features snippets of the challenges he had to face before becoming a football star. The clip also highlights the relationship between Warner and his wife, who was supportive of his dreams from the very beginning.
To promote the inspirational film, the studio has released various teasers from American Underdog. In a clip titled Final Touchdown we see Warner making a career-defining touchdown as his wife, family, and coach (played by Dennis Quaid) look on with pride.
The movie (with stellar performances from Dennis Quaid) is directed by Andrew and Jon, from a screenplay written by Jon Erwin, David Aaron Cohen, and Jon Gunn. For accuracy, the scriptwriters sourced material from interviews with Kurt Warner and his memoir – All Things Possible: My Story of Faith, Football and the First Miracle Season. Kurt and Brenda Warner are executive producing the project along with Tony Young, Jon Gunn, and Sean Devereaux. Kevin Downes, Jon Erwin, Andrew Erwin, Mark Ciardi, and Daryl Lefever will also serve as producers.
American Underdog follows Kurt Warner’s journey as an undrafted player who ascends to greatness by winning Super Bowl XXXIV. Over his legendary career, he played for the St. Louis Rams, the New York Giants, and the Arizona Cardinals. After his first Super Bowl win, he played in two others, won MVP awards, and earned himself a spot in the Arena League Hall of Fame and the NFL Hall of Fame.
The film chronicles Warner’s unique story from his days as a grocery store stock-boy and the years of challenges and setbacks that could have derailed his aspirations to become an NFL player. Eventually, his dreams seem out of reach, but with the support of his wife Brenda (Anna Paquin) and the encouragement of his family, coaches (Dennis Quaid), and teammates, Kurt Warner (Zachary Levi, known for his work on Shazam!) perseveres and finds the strength to show the world the champion he’s been all along.
American Underdog is an uplifting story that demonstrates that anything is possible when you have faith, family, and determination – making it the perfect holiday film for the whole family. The cast is led by the talents of Dennis Quad, Zachary Levi, and Anna Paquin. Joining them on screen are Cindy Hogan, Ser’Darius Blain, Adam Baldwin, Bruce McGill, Danny Vinson, Chance Kelly, Hayden Zaller, Cora Kate Wilkerson, and Nic Harris.
Filming for the Dennis Quaid starrer took place in Atlanta and Oklahoma City between January 25th and March 6th. The film’s original title was then shortened from American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story to American Underdog. The movie is set to hit theaters on December 25th.
