Denis Villeneuve Working On New Sci-Fi Movie, Dune 3 Affected?

By Jason Collins | Updated

Denis Villeneuve, the director of the mega-successful Dune adaptation, looks to spearhead yet another project on top of his already-packed schedule. With Dune 3 announced, screenwriter Eric Roth has announced that he’s writing a secret screenplay for Denis Villeneuve, with the iconic director stating that he will work on a movie whose screenplay is completed first. So, what are the odds of Dune 3 being affected?

Adapting Arthur C. Clarke

Well, that remains to be seen. Many have wondered whether the new Denis Villeneuve sci-fi is an adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama, especially since the director was attached to the project even before he was attached to Cleopatra, which is still in its pre-production phase. According to his IMDb page, Villeneuve is currently working on four films at various stages of development, with Dune: Messiah currently being in active development.

Unlikely To Impact Dune 3

In other words, the new Denis Villeneuve sci-fi isn’t likely to affect the development of Dune 3 in any major way, considering that Roth is still writing the screenplay for the new movie.

We know that the new movie isn’t connected to Rendezvous with Rama because that particular movie is also in active development at the moment, leaving us with basically no clues about the project. Some unverified sources claim that the movie is an adaptation of the I’m Waiting for You short story by Korean author Bo-Young Kim.

Denis Villeneuve Is Working On Multiple Projects

I’m Waiting For You is centered on a man who travels through time and space in an increasingly desperate attempt to reunite with his fiancée. However, small incidents wreak havoc on space and time, driving their wedding date further away.

It’s not Dune, but there’s plenty of potential to turn this into a respectable movie. Considering that the screenplay is still being written, we can assume that Dune 3 is safe and unaffected, at least for now.

But, as previously stated, the aforementioned movies and the new Denis Villeneuve sci-fi movie aren’t the only projects the director is working on. Cleopatra is based on the legendary ruler’s biography written by Stacy Schiff, with Zendaya attached to the project as the lead, and Nuclear War: A Scenario—currently in pre-production—is a movie adaptation of Annie Jacobsen’s non-fiction book.

No Details Yet Regarding Dune 3

Dune 3, a sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi wonder, is also experiencing some shifts in development. Actress Rebecca Ferguson stated that she hasn’t been let in on any details regarding Dune 3’s story and has expressed uncertainty surrounding the reprisal of her role in the movie.

Ferguson revealed that none of the Dune: Part 2 cast have deals for the next movie. This means that the contracts and paychecks would have to be re-negotiated, which could increase production costs.

Fans Will Have To Be Patient

Denis Villeneuve

This is particularly true because Zendaya and Timothy Chalamet have risen over the last few years, so they will likely secure considerable salary increases for the film’s third installment. As for the reported Denis Villeneuve sci-fi, everything is still hearsay, and without official confirmation from those involved with the project, it’s best to treat it as a rumor and nothing else at the moment.
