Demi Moore has had a number of striking and memorable roles over the years. The actress has had an incredibly varied career and it is impossible to pigeonhole her into one particular type of role. But, one film stands out in her career as both the sexiest and one of the most reviled films she ever did. And it just so happens that that movie will be making its way to Netflix on the first day of the new year.
In 1996, Demi Moore starred in Striptease, an erotic movie that acts somewhat as a comedy and a little bit as a drama (is it fair to call it a dramedy?). Moore stars as a former FBI secretary who decides to take up stripping in order to afford the legal fees she needs to get her daughter back in a custody battle. Along the way, she ends up getting involved with a corrupt politician (Burt Reynolds) and gets tied up with his affairs. Needless to say, things don’t go so well for anyone involved. And along the way, Moore does a whole lot of striptease dancing.
It is fascinating that Demi Moore managed to star in both Striptease and the Disney animated film The Hunchback of Notre Dame in the same year. That might have been part of the reason that the movie garnered a lot of negative attention. In addition to releasing only a couple of years after the infamous Showgirls, Striptease was targeted by critics for its erotic subject matter and trashy material. And it ended up being critically panned in such a massive fashion that it marked a significant downturn in the perceived appraisal of Moore as an actress.
Money might have had something to do with that as well. At the time, Demi Moore was given the biggest reported paycheck for an actress ever with Striptease. Her final total came up to $12.5 million. That was a milestone that might have actually garnered some negative press because of how exorbitant it was. Coupled with scathing reviews, Moore saw her star rapidly fall. Although she would continue to work over the years, her prestige never quite reached pre-Striptease levels. She is certainly a well-respected actress to this day and has been in quality projects over the years, but it is worth arguing that Striptease ended up doing her more harm than good in the long run.
With the film hitting Netflix, it is going to be interesting to see if Striptease undergoes reevaluation in the same way Showgirls has. There is no question that Demi Moore delivers a committed and striking performance in the film. Could we see reviewers take another look at the movie and determine if it warrants a fresh perspective? If so, everyone with a Netflix subscription will be given the opportunity to revisit Striptease or see it for the very first time. No doubt that new opinions about the movie, be they positive or negative, are bound to crop up once it’s so easily available to watch. Talk about a wild way to ring in the new year.
