Hollywood superstar Demi Moore is set to star in The Substance, a new horror movie from Universal Pictures and Working Title Films. Starring alongside her is 27-year-old Margaret Qualley, who had her breakout role in 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She also starred in the acclaimed Netflix miniseries Maid, which earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination. The Demi Moore film is being helmed by Coralie Fargeat, who made her directorial debut for 2017’s Revenge. The indie project debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival, as part of the Midnight Madness section. The film received critical acclaim, with praise for the screenplay, direction, and cinematography. It was also praised by many viewers for reinventing the horror-thriller revenge genre.
Besides Demi Moore’s casting, specifics about The Substance are being kept under wraps. But, according to Deadline, the film will be an explosive feminist take on body horror. Production on the movie begins in Paris this May. In addition to directing, Fargeat will serve as producer alongside Working Title partners Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan. Universal Pictures Senior Executive Vice President of Production Development Erik Baiers will oversee for the studio, and Alexandra Loewy and Nicolas Royer will be executive producers.
Since Demi Moore isn’t really known for horror, it will be interesting to see what kind of role she plays. The Hollywood veteran rose to fame in the 1990s after starring in hit movies like Ghost and A Few Good Men. Working steadily through those years, she became one of the most recognized talents in the entertainment industry. Her less conventional roles include voicing Esmeralda in Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame and transforming into a buzz-cut toting soldier in G.I Jane.
The Ghost stars’ accolades include nominations for a Critics’ Choice Movie Award, two Golden Globe Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She also released a memoir in 2019, called Inside Out, which became a New York Times Best Seller. In recent years the 59-year-old who’s been married to Bruce Willis and Ashton Kutcher had roles in films such as Rough Night and a guest part in the series Empire.
Most recently, Demi Moore lent her voice to QCode’s audio drama podcast Dirty Diana. Described as a sex-positive exploration of a woman’s troubled marriage, the show also features Claes Bang alongside various guest stars. The story follows Diana who escapes her carefully curated life and marriage by secretly running an erotic website where women reveal their intimate sexual fantasies. Due to its popularity, the show is being adapted into an Amazon series starring Moore who will also executive produce.
For her next feature, Demi Moore will star in Please Baby Please, which kicked off the 2022 Rotterdam film festival. The film is directed by Amanda Kramer, from a screenplay by Kramer and Noel David Taylor. Set in 1950s Manhattan, the story follows a newlywed couple who witness a murder and become the obsession of a greaser gang. This awakens a sleeping quandary about the couple’s sexual identity. It also stars Andrea Riseborough, Harry Melling, and Karl Glusman.
