Deadpool & Wolverine Villain Reveals The Perfect Inspiration

By Christopher Isaac | Published

With the release of Deadpool & Wolverine less than one month away, fans will soon be seeing what surprises the movie has in store, but one that has just been revealed now is the unexpected inspiration for the movie’s villain. Actress Emma Corrin recently shared that for their portrayal of Charles Xavier’s villainous sister Cassandra Nova, they took inspiration from the Nazis in Inglourious Basterds, as well as…Willy Wonka?

Yes, according to Emma Corrin, they based part of their inspiration for Deadpool & Wolverine’s villain off of Gene Wilder’s beloved depiction of the candy factory operator. It might sound bizarre and laughable at first, but then plenty of fans have commented on how part of the charm of Wilder’s portrayal of Wonka is that he provides an eerie sense of menace to the character. Explaining why they pulled from this unusual combination of characters for Deadpool & Wolverine’s villain, Emma Corrin said, “There’s something extravagant in Gene Wilder’s performance.”

Evidently they saw that same kind of vibe when they were watching Inglourious Basterds. “And it’s a similar energy that Christoph Waltz has in Inglourious Basterds because he’s wearing a uniform so he can sit there and drink a glass of milk and pretend he’s a f***ing fairy godmother.”

Emma Corrin As Cassandra Nova

The role in general is an odd shift for Corrin who has never really played a villain in a show or movie before, so being Deadpool & Wolverine’s villain was something that appealed to them a lot. Speaking why they took the role, they confirmed that new territory intrigued them, saying, “I think probably because it is a major contrast to my normal roles, and I always wanted to play a villain. And then Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.”

Corrin makes it clear that the opportunity to work with two people as talented as Reynolds and Jackman felt like an opportunity to work with masters in their craft. They also acknowledged that taking a role in a typical Marvel film might have been risky right now since the genre is in a bit of a slump. But Corrin felt playing Deadpool & Wolverine’s villain would be a safe bet because of how beloved Deadpool is by fans.

Sabretooth Will Make An Appearance As Well

It is also already known that Cassandra Nova will not be Deadpool & Wolverine’s sole villain, as a recently released teaser confirmed the return of Tyler Mane playing Sabretooth. Mane last played the character in the original X-Men from 2000. It’s unclear how significant of a role he may have, but fans are already very excited to see the actor is returning after 24 years away.

Plenty Of Adversaries To Consider

With this being the first Deadpool movie officially under the banner of the MCU and it embracing this phase’s multiverse theme, fans are expecting Deadpool & Wolverine to potentially have quite a few returning villains. Prior Deadpool films had to play coy with avoiding mentioning characters owned by Marvel Studios, but with the franchise now officially a part of the MCU, there will undoubtedly be a much larger roster of guest characters to potentially feature.

Bust Out The Wonkavision!

As for Emma Corrin, they said they were ready to immerse themselves in the role of Cassandra Nova as much as possible, including hiring a trainer. However, Marvel Studios reached out and made it clear that they were not expecting Corrin to develop the body of a professional athlete just to play Deadpool & Wolverine’s villain. But with the Willy Wonka influences apparently being given the green light, it will be fun to try and spot them when the film debuts on July 26.
