Deadpool Sequels Need To Stick To The Current Formula In One Important Way

By Michileen Martin | Published

I have no idea if there will be more Deadpool sequels, but with Deadpool & Wolverine so far making over $1.1 billion, I’m going to go out on a limb and say Disney wants more. If Deadpool 4 and beyond is on the horizon, I think the latest film made it clear what the future of the franchise should look like—Deadpool needs to stick with the team-ups.

Team-Ups

Go to any major comic book merchant’s website, run a search on “Deadpool” and you will learn just how popular Deadpool team-ups are. There have been Deadpool team-up or versus books (which usually become team-ups) with Deadpool and Black Panther, Spider-Man, Wolverine, X-Force, the Punisher, Carnage, Thanos, Cable, Old Man Logan, Gambit, Captain America, Hawkeye, and more.

In fact, there have been three volumes of Deadpool Team-Up, the most recent of which is coming out as we speak.

Why are Deadpool team-ups so popular and what does it have to do with sequels?

The answer should be clear as soon as you watch the very first Deadpool movie—because Wade Wilson is never as funny and engaging as he is when he has other superheroes to bounce off of.

That’s why the original film and all the Deadpool sequels that followed have really been team-up films. The only difference is that they called the 2018 sequel Deadpool 2 rather than Deadpool & X-Force.

Deadpool & The Guardians Of The Galaxy

Now that he’s attached to the MCU, Deadpool’s sequels have more opportunities than ever. There are a lot of MCU characters he would have great chemistry with, including the Guardians of the Galaxy.

In particular, I think the iteration of the team that exists at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be perfect for one of the Deadpool sequels. It would give Wade the chance to go on some cosmic adventures, the chemistry between him and Rocket would be epic, and it would give us another chance to see the Guardians.

Deadpool & Thor

For better or worse, the Taika Waititi-helmed Thor films turned the thunder god into a much more comedic character, making him another great choice for one of the Deadpool sequels.

Unlike Wolverine and most Deadpool’s other team-up opportunities at Marvel, I think Thor would actually get along with Wade. He wouldn’t always agree with Deadpool’s methods, but considering how long he’s been alive and the wars he’s seen, I think Thor would be one of the few Marvel heroes who would find Wade amusing.

Maybe that’s why he’s the one mysteriously caring for Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Deadpool & Doctor Strange

Like Deadpool, Doctor Strange tends not to work and play well with others, which is exactly why he would be great in one of the Deadpool sequels.

Between his disappointment with Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home and his rivalry with Tony Stark in Avengers: Infinity War, it’s not tough to imagine how Strange would react to Deadpool. He’d probably hate Wade more than Logan does for most of Deadpool & Wolverine, and oh the spells he would cast to torture him…

Deadpool & Spider-Man… Shouldn’t Happen

I may be in the minority here, but as things stand now, I don’t think Spider-Man would be a good team-up choice for any of the Deadpool sequels. Yes, fans may clamor for it and yes, the pair actually enjoyed a very successful Spider-Man/Deadpool ongoing comic book.

The problem is Deadpool always acts like he wouldn’t mind being more than friends with the heroes he teams up with. In the comics, that’s not an issue because that Peter Parker is supposed to be significantly older.

But with the Tom Holland version of the character, it would be tough for Deadpool’s joking hints to not come off as a bit more predatory than normal. Yes, Peter would technically be of “legal” age, but it would still come off as creepy.
