Deadpool 3’s Title Revealed? Of Course It’s Making A Mockery Of Everything
Deadpool 3 might have just revealed its very cheeky title.

Deadpool 3 has been teetering around for quite a while after the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney. Exactly what the future holds for the Merc with a Mouth is a little unclear, but a new rumor says that the movie will have a very particular subtitle that calls attention to the silliness surrounding it.
ScreenGeek noticed that a 4Chan post says that Deadpool 3 will be called Deadpool: Retcon. It is definitely worth taking this rumor with a large grain of salt, but ScreenGeek writer Vince Hoover points out that 4Chan featured early leaks for Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home that all turned out to be true. So, there is some precedent for that place to have correct information from time to time.
For anyone a little confused about Deadpool 3 getting the subtitle Retcon, the term is a shortened version of “retroactive continuity.” It is a literary approach where established canon is changed or new information is introduced that changes previously known information in a story’s universe. So, if this is the actual subtitle for the third Deadpool film, it looks like it will be pointing out how it is going to have to shift around its own continuity to fit within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
There is no question that Deadpool 3 is going to have an unusual road to the big screen. The character’s popularity is unquestioned and Marvel Studios certainly wants to capitalize on that. However, having him fit into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to be a bit tricky. We have heard that his inclusion in any Marvel Cinematic Universe movies will be minor and somewhat lighthearted. But, the solo Deadpool films will not carry the Marvel Studios banner so that they are allowed to remain R-rated. We might be getting the first glimpse of this strategy in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness if the rumor about a Deadpool cameo in that movie is true.
To be frank, Deadpool: Retcon does not sound like the best title for Deadpool 3. It feels even more like an inside joke than the Merc with a Mouth is known for. Will mainstream audiences understand the term? Or will they even really car beyond what it might mean to see Wade Wilson pop up alongside other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters? At this point, is it really necessary to tag the movie with a subtitle, even if it’s for a bit of fan-service jokeyness?
We will just have to wait and see if Deadpool 3 decides to go with the title of Deadpool: Retcon or if it has another idea in mind. The series is well known for poking fun at itself, superhero movies, and franchise filmmaking in general. We would not put it above Ryan Reynolds to give the movie a subtitle that wryly acknowledged the new status quo for the character and his franchise allegiances. Or maybe they will keep things simple and stick with Deadpool 3. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
