Netflix Cancels DC Series With No Season 2
Netflix has canceled Dead Boy Detectives after its first season—despite great reviews—proving once again that the platform also doubles as a shelter where rejected releases go to die. The cancelation of this great series comes about four months after the show, which is set in the same universe as The Sandman, premiered on Netflix.
Dead Boy Detectives Canceled
Sadly, Netflix hasn’t provided any justification for canceling a series that has been so well received among both critics and audiences. Ultimately, it doesn’t even have to, but we’d still like to acknowledge the series’ twisty road that led it to the world’s largest streamer and a possible reason why Netflix decided not to continue Dead Boy Detectives. But before we do, let’s provide context to those who haven’t seen the series.
Sold To Netflix
Dead Boy Detectives is an American supernatural horror detective comedy-drama television series. It follows Edwyn Payne and Charles Rowland, two ghosts who decided not to enter the afterlife as they roam the Earth and investigate crimes involving the supernatural.
The show was initially ordered by Warner Bros for Max, then known as HBO Max, back in 2021 before it was sold to Netflix in 2023. At the time, it didn’t fit in with the new direction for Max-DC content helmed by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Created By Neil Gaiman
Obtaining Dead Boy Detectives from Max was a smart move for Netflix because the series was based on the characters created by Neil Gaiman for DC Comics, so it fit nicely with Netflix’s The Sandman universe.
That was especially true since the Dead Boy Detectives were actually first introduced in an issue of The Sandman comic book. Needless to say, Dead Boy Detectives was a critical hit on the streaming platform, with critics praising the writing, directing, and tone, cast performances, and visuals.
Dead Boy Detectives Is Critically Acclaimed
The fact that Season 1 of Dead Boy Detectives has a critics rating of 92 percent and an audience rating of 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes only proves what we’ve been saying all this time—Warner Bros. is a reactionary company with a complete lack of vision and originality.
Sure, the new Batman animated series might be great, but it’s still Batman and not really a novelty. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised to learn that WB might’ve commissioned the Dead Boy Detectives after hearing that Netflix is adapting The Sandman—like a naughty child copying someone else’s homework.
Sandman Remains?
Ultimately, none of that actually matters because Netflix decided to end the series following the conclusion of Season 1.
It makes sense, especially since the series fared better with the critics and the audiences compared to its own The Sandman, which lags behind Dead Boy Detectives by a few percentages.
Though the latter didn’t contain our favorite version of Lucifer, whose adaptation Netflix saved from Fox’s chopping block, it did manage to captivate enough attention to warrant a second season. That is currently in development.
Still Stream Dead Boy Detectives
Those who haven’t seen Dead Boy Detectives, along with those who want to re-watch the series, can find it streaming on Netflix.
