The CW Network has released the first teaser trailer for Naomi – a brand new DC superhero series. Developed for television by Ava DuVernay, the series chronicles the journey of a cool, confident, comic book-loving teenager as she pursues her destiny. When her story begins, Naomi is an ordinary teenager who runs a popular Superman fansite. But her life changes forever when a mysterious incident involving the Man of Steel rocks her hometown.

In the fallout, Naomi discovers that she has superpowers too and may not be from Earth. Her search for answers eventually leads her to Dee – a tattoo parlor owner who is a winged alien from the planet Thanagar (It’s worth noting that in DC comic book lore Hawkman and Hawkgirl hail from Thanagar). While the series is set to be an epic adventure, don’t expect our hero to start fighting bad guys in the pilot. Much like Smallville, the show will focus on every step of Naomi’s origin story before she suits up.

The DC series will be written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker. The CW gave the project a pilot order in February and was picked up for a series order in May. DuVernay will produce the series alongside Jill Blankenship, Sarah Bremner, and Paul Garnes. The pilot is written by DuVernay and directed by Amanda Marsalis.

Naomi is based on the DC comic book series of the same name and stars Kaci Walfall as Naomi McDuffie. Sharing in her adventures will be Mary-Charles Jones as her best friend Annabelle, Camila Moreno as comic book store clerk Lourdes, and Daniel Puig as her ex-boyfriend Nathan. Naomi is set to premiere on January 11, 2022.

Created by writer Brian Michael Bendis for his Wonder Comics imprint, Naomi made her DC comic book debut in 2019. The character was developed alongside David F. Walker and artist Jamal Campbell. Naomi’s name also serves as a tribute to comic book writer and creator Dwayne McDuffie who was known for his dedication to inclusion and diversity.

For anyone who doesn’t know, Naomi exists in an alternate timeline within the DC Multiverse. After the degradation of Earth’s ozone layer exposed the planet’s surface to a previously-unknown type of radioactive energy, 29 random people developed godlike powers. While some of them sought to rule the world, others strongly opposed it. This difference of opinion led to a cataclysmic war between the metahumans.

The battle left 14 metahumans dead. Seven others left the planet. And the remaining eight decided to live a quiet life on Earth. Naomi is the first child born to two of these metahumans. When a super-human criminal named Zumbado tries to kill baby Naomi, her parents send her to DC’s Earth-0 where she is adopted by Greg McDuffie – a Rannian ex-soldier. Naomi lived a fairly ordinary life in her hometown until the day Superman crashes through the center of town in a battle with Mongul. When rumors of another time the town had an encounter with otherworldly beings start to swirl, Naomi realizes she might have a connection to superheroes and starts looking into her origins.
