DC Superhero Adventure Is The Most Popular Movie In The World

The story follows Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), who teams up with his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to stop Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) from harming Arthur’s family and unleashing a catastrophic evil on the world using the cursed Black Trident. 

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom begins four years after Arthur ascended to the throne of Atlantis.

In that time, Arthur built a life beneath the waves and on the surface. His marriage to Mera (Amber Heard) is a happy one, with their son, Arthur Jr. However, David Kane/Black Manta still harbors an unrelenting thirst for vengeance against Arthur for the death of his father.

So he teams up with marine biologist Stephen Shin (Randall Park), Black Manta, to search for a dangerous Atlantean artifact.

The pair eventually finds the Black Trident that promises Black Manta a means to exact his revenge.

He plans an attack on Atlantis that disrupts the serenity Arthur sought to establish. Determined to thwart Manta’s plans to destroy his home, Arthur asks his half-brother Orm for help, setting the stage for an intense final confrontation in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

After breaking Orm out of prison, the siblings travel to the Sunken Citadel, a pirate haven ruled by Kingfish, to gather information on Manta’s whereabouts.

The trail leads them to a volcanic island in the South Pacific, a treacherous terrain mutated by the Orichalcum’s influence. Meanwhile, Manta kidnaps Arthur Jr., intending to use the child’s blood to free Kordax.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom had been in the works following the success of its 2018 predecessor.

Despite initial hesitation, James Wan committed to overseeing the development in January 2019. Johnson-McGoldrick joined the project a month later, and Wan’s return as the director was confirmed in August 2020.

Although Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is described as a buddy comedy between Aquaman and Orm, the film also addresses more serious themes like climate change.

The story drew inspiration from the Silver Age of Comic Books, incorporating a retro sci-fi atmosphere reminiscent of animator Ray Harryhausen’s works and the horror films of the 1960s.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom premiered at a fan event in Los Angeles in December 2023 and was released in theaters a few days before Christmas.

While the film received mixed reviews from critics, it proved somewhat successful, earning $434 million globally against a production budget of approximately $215 million.

While Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom marks the conclusion of the DCEU, Jason Momoa has expressed interest in continuing his work with DC as the iconic Lobo.

Known for his antiheroic antics, Lobo is an intergalactic bounty hunter with superhuman strength and a penchant for violence. Lobo’s unpredictable nature and unique personality make him an interesting choice for Momoa’s potential future endeavors in the DC universe.
