Dave Chappelle Drops Surprise Netflix Special Announcement And Release
Dave Chappelle has a new Netflix special coming out on December 31, 2023, so you better mark your calendar. Netflix announced the upcoming special last week on their X (formerly Twitter) account, and fans are beyond excited.
The 25-second trailer doesn’t tell us much aside from the fact that “Dave is back,” but it’s safe to say that we’re going to have yet another amazing hour of stand-up comedy to add to the rotation.
Dave Chappelle Is Back
Though it was said in the past that Dave Chappelle’s 2021 Netflix special, The Closer, would be his last, it’s clear that he’s not quite finished.
The Closer marked the end of Dave Chappelle’s six-special deal with Netflix. Netflix paid Dave Chappelle $20 million for each release under this deal.
More Controversy?
And it’s evident that the upcoming Dave Chappelle special is going to deliver more social commentary than we could handle when you look at the replies to Netflix’s X post.
X user @adammahogany claims to have been at the taping of the special this past October and said it was really funny. But in the same post, he also mentioned that it will probably cause some issues.
Dave Chappelle Vs. Transgender Community
For those who don’t remember, The Closer garnered quite a bit of controversy upon its release in 2021.
Dave Chappelle’s comments about the transgender community were so offensive to some Netflix employees that they actually organized a walkout to get the special pulled.
But as polarizing as the special was, it went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Comedy album, and Netflix CEO defended the special as freedom of artistic expression.
The Closer was also nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Variety Special and Directing for a Variety Special.
Dave Chappelle’s Netflix Specials
Despite the controversy, all of Dave Chappelle’s Netflix specials remain on the platform.
So if you need to catch up on your lore ahead of the new release, you can easily queue up The Age of Spin, Deep in the Heart of Texas, Equanimity, The Bird Revelation, Sticks & Stones, and The Closer for you viewing pleasure.
Special Is Still A Secret
As of this writing, not much is known about Dave Chappelle’s new Netflix special.
Though Chappelle has been hard at work touring and working on new material, his audience members weren’t allowed to use their cell phones during his performance.
Past reports have revealed that the comedian locked everyone’s phones in plastic bags so the new material couldn’t be leaked to the public ahead of its release.
What’s more, we don’t even know the title of the upcoming special, but we’ll find out soon enough.
More The Just Stand-up
If you’re not one for stand-up comedy, but enjoy Dave Chappelle when he’s performing bits and sketches, you can always catch both seasons of Chappelle’s Show on Netflix.
So if monologues aren’t your thing, but you still want to watch Charlie Murphy go toe-to-toe with Prince during a heated basketball game, then you’re in luck.
Dave Chappelle is still at the top of his game, and if his past accolades are any indication, his upcoming Netflix special will continue to push the envelope and stir up controversy while bringing the house down with uproarious laughter.
