Dave Bautista’s Worst Movie Just Got A Sequel
Dave Bautista's family comedy My Spy is getting a sequel titled My Spy: The Eternal City.
Dave Bautista is blowing up right now. After appearing next to an all-star cast in Netflix’s hit Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and kicking the year off with M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin, Bautista has a big 2023 on the way. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Bautista’s slate just got bigger, as the star begins production on the sequel My Spy: The Eternal City in March.
Led by Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman, The Eternal City is a follow-up to the 2020 film My Spy. Originally slated for a theatrical release, My Spy was one of the many films in 2020 to be rerouted directly to streaming. The film was a hit for Amazon Prime Video. Despite middle-of-the-road reviews, My Spy finished as one of the most streamed films of that year.
My Spy stars Dave Bautista as a CIA operative tasked with protecting a young girl, played by Coleman, and her mother. After discovering his secret agent identity, Coleman leverages the information to make Bautista use his spy skills to help her navigate kid life. The pair bonded on- and off-screen, compelling Bautista to push for a sequel.
The Eternal City will feature Chloe Coleman, now a teenager, recruiting Dave Bautista to chaperone her school trip to Italy. The trip goes awry when the pair find themselves entangled with international terrorists. This time, Bautista and Coleman are joined by comedy veterans Anna Faris, Craig Robinson, and Flula Borg.
The first film’s director, Get Smart’s Peter Segal, will return to helm the sequel based on his story. The screenplay for The Eternal City was written by returning scribes Jon and Erich Hoeber. A release date for the film has not yet been announced.
News of The Eternal City comes amidst a landmark year for Dave Bautista. Originally a professional wrestler, Bautista got his big break as an actor in the 2014 Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy. The actor will wrap up his stint at Marvel this May with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
The actor will then return for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two and for Netflix’s Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. Bautista is positioned to join Mila Jovovich for In the Lost Lands, a werewolf film by Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson.
Dave Bautista is close friends with his Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, who is now a co-CEO at DC Studios. Rumors indicate that Bautista’s name is being floated around at DC for a big role, either as a hero or a villain in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s newly imagined DCU. Another major superhero project could soon join Bautista’s growing list of upcoming credits.
Dave Bautista is a Hollywood underdog who represents the value of hard work and dedication. The actor was down and out before he was cast in Guardians, but his work ethic never wavered. Bautista’s commitment has positioned him as one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood, and he won’t stop until he has made every kind of movie he can.
