Dave Bautista Wants To Swap Drax For Another Comic Book Character

By Britta DeVore | Published

Like many other wrestlers who have made their way into the film industry, Dave Bautista has essentially been typecast into every role he’s played. While we’d love to see him in a rom-com at some point down the road, Bautista shared his hopes of eventually rejoining Marvel in the form of a big-bad villain. This means that, despite being done with the tedious hours in the makeup chair that went into bringing his Guardians of the Galaxy character, Drax the Destroyer, to life, he’s not yet done with the idea of returning to the MCU.

Dave Bautista Is Done With Drax But Not Marvel

Over three Guardians of the Galaxy films, a holiday special, and a smattering of other Avengers-centered projects, Dave Bautista was playing Drax for nearly a decade. During this time, he not only struck up a deep relationship with the rest of the members of his cosmic crew, but he also became rather chummy with Marvel head Kevin Feige and producer Louis D’Esposito. Bautista explained that while he’s “done with my journey as Drax,” he’s ensured that Feige knows that the door isn’t completely closed as he’s a self-proclaimed fan of the “superhero universe.”

Friends With James Gunn

And, although his current alliance lies with Marvel, Dave Bautista was sure to add, “Marvel or DC, if they call, I would answer the phone,” teasing that if his home studio’s rival pitched him an offer that he couldn’t refuse, he’d accept in a heartbeat. It’s also worth noting that the director of the Guardians trilogy was James Gunn, who is now the co-head of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. Bautista and Gunn obviously have a close bond after having worked together for all those years, so it doesn’t come as a complete surprise that he would be open to crossing over.

As for the part he would be eyeing with either Marvel or DC, Dave Bautista wants to get in touch with his more sinister side, saying that he’d “love” to appear as “an ominous villain in the superhero universe.” Although Drax was known as “The Destroyer,” the sarcastic and dry-humored man living under that toned physique had the heart of an angel. But, in Bautista’s eyes, he’s now been there and is ready for a new challenge that would pit him against some of Earth’s mightiest heroes.

Other Stars Have Played Multiple Characters

For naysayers out there already shutting down Dave Bautista’s dreams of playing a different part in the MCU after his run as one of the Guardians of the Galaxy, may we turn our attention to the multitude of stars who have appeared in numerous roles. Gemma Chan played Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel before landing the part of Sersi in Eternals, while Linda Cardellini played Laura Barton throughout the MCU and then voiced Lylla the Otter in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. These serve as just two examples of a sprawling amount of crossovers in Feige’s superhero universe.

What’s Next For Bautista

Dave Bautista’s next move will see him reprising his role as Glossu Rabban in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic, Dune: Part Two. Beyond his role as the brutal and brazen House Harkonnen warrior, Bautista has a lengthy docket of projects in front of him, including My Spy: The Eternal City, The Killer’s Game, and The Last Showgirl
