Dave Bautista Finally Gets The Movie He’s Wanted For So Long

By Douglas Helm | Updated

Last year, Dave Bautista wondered during an interview with Page Six why he’s never been offered a rom-com leading role, saying, “Is there something that unappealing about me that excludes me from these parts?” It seems like studios simply weren’t aware of Bautista’s romcom dreams, as at the premiere of his new movie, Bautista revealed to the Hollywood Reporter that his comments “sparked quite a conversation, but I started getting a lot of phone calls after that.” He also added that there are a couple of projects that he’s developing now, saying that it won’t be an “action rom-com” but a “full-on rom-com.”

Getting A Rom-Com In A Half-Step

However, Dave Bautista finally got to prove his rom-com chops in the upcoming The Killer’s Game, which is more of an action movie but still features a romance with Sofia Boutella’s character. This makes The Killer’s Game the first movie Bautista’s been in, where he’s the leading man and has a love interest.

The film stars Bautista as an assassin who authorizes a hit on himself when he learns he has a life-threatening illness, only to realize that his diagnosis was a mistake and that he’s actually perfectly healthy.

While Dave Bautista has had a variety of eclectic roles since entering Hollywood, it’s safe to say that none of them fit into the rom-com category. He brought plenty of nuance to his biggest role as the brutish Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, but his character’s wife was already dead when we were introduced to Drax. Meanwhile, his recent turns in Dune and Dune: Part Two as Beast Rabban were the furthest thing from romantic or comedic.

Proved His Dramatic Chops

Although it’s always great to see the former wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista lend his physicality and athleticism to an action flick, it’ll be great to see him take on new acting challenges in films like rom coms. Bautista has already more than proven that he can take on comedic roles with his roles like the aforementioned Drax the Destroyer and his turn in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. For drama, his quiet role in Blade Runner 2049, the more serious shades of Drax, and his terrifying performances in Dune and A Knock at the Cabin more than prove his skills.

A Genre He Has Yet To Conquer

Looking at it that way, Dave Bautista really only has the romance genre left to conquer, and it seems like there’s at least one Bautista rom com on the way, if not more. It’s not hard to imagine the first one being successful, so perhaps Bautista’s phone will continue ringing for rom-coms in the near future. Now we have to wait and see who his co-star will be.

The Killer’s Game Is Now In Theaters

Dave Bautista also has plenty of projects on the way before he stars in his first rom com. Some upcoming films include In the Lost Lands and the animated Aang: The Last Airbender film. In the meantime, fans can catch Bautista, Sofia Boutella, Pom Klementieff, Drew McIntyre, Scott Adkins, Terry Crews, and Ben Kingsley in The Killer’s Game when it hits theaters everywhere this weekend.
