According to the newly released trailer for Disney+’s LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, Jar Jar Binks has attained the title of Darth, officially acknowledging the Darth Jar Jar Binks fan theory without actually making it canon. The upcoming LEGO series trailer was filled with entertaining Star Wars Easter Eggs, with the upcoming release serving as an equivalent to Marvel’s What If…? given its reimagining of the popular universe.

By incorporating Darth Jar Jar Binks into the series, Disney officially gives credit to the fan theory.

The fan theory we’re referring to asserts that Jar Jar Binks was secretly a Sith Lord and the greatest mastermind behind Palpatine’s plot to overtake the galaxy. It’s a rather absurd theory that the fans have entertained for years, nonetheless. The trailer for the upcoming LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy now ends with the shot of Darth Jar Jar Binks holding a red lightsaber, and even expressly referred to him as a Darth—a title reserved for Sith Lords.

By incorporating Darth Jar Jar Binks into the series, Disney officially gives credit to the fan theory. Still, considering that the upcoming series turns the whole canon on its head, it does so without subverting the official canon, which allows for more expansive storytelling, similar to that of What If…?.

This further fueled the Darth Jar Jar Binks fan theory, which stated that Palpatine couldn’t seize power without using Jar Jar.

Jar Jar Binks is a foolhardy Gungan who was first introduced to the franchise in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and was a true menace of a character. Most fans outright disliked him, considered him a nuisance, and claimed that he had ruined the Star Wars movie.

However, this overly simple and borderline annoying character hides several details that make him an extremely complex character, further supporting the Darth Jar Jar Binks theory. The theory states that Jar Jar Binks isn’t just a gullible and mumbling character appearing in the prequel trilogy but a direct collaborator of Sheev Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious. As stated above, it is a rather absurd theory, but there’s quite a bit of evidence that could support the idea of Jar Jar being involved with the Sith.

Jar Jar Binks is a foolhardy Gungan, who was first introduced to the franchise in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and was a true menace of a character.

Namely, some of Jar Jar’s more impressive feats resulted from his use of the Force; he showcased impressive physical capabilities that the Force might have enhanced, including a deceptive style of martial arts that would make him seem incompetent rather than a threat. There were also several key moments in The Phantom Menace in which Jar Jar was able to convince others by gesturing with his hands, similar to Jedi mind tricks—all of which indicates that the foolish Jar Jar is a covert, Force-wielding Darth Jar Jar Binks.

What makes this theory even more interesting is the fact that George Lucas has spent years referring to Jar Jar as being “the key to all this.” This further fueled the Darth Jar Jar Binks fan theory, which stated that Palpatine couldn’t seize power without using Jar Jar. In reality, Lucas was referring to the importance of CGI and motion capture in creating Jar Jar, not his importance in the overarching narrative.
