AMC series Dark Winds got confirmation that they will be continuing with a third installment in September of 2023, bringing the Southwestern mystery drama back for more chilling suspense. Dark Winds Season 3 will pick up about six months after Season Two left off, with a new mystery to solve and new challenges for the characters. With more tangled secrets to unravel, the Dark Winds cast will lead their audience through conspiracies, disappearances, and scandals at the border in the upcoming season.

Dark Winds Expands The World

The upcoming season of Dark Winds finds Lephorn and Chee searching for two missing kids after finding a blood spot on the ground and an abandoned bike while Bernadette Manuelito begins her new job on the border, confronting human trafficking and drug-running conspiracies.

The cast is plunged into a new set of mysteries in Dark Winds Season 3, with farther-reaching consequences as the plot spreads out beyond the confines of the reservation, 500 miles south towards the Méxican border. Following each thread, the detectives will take their audience through another round of tension-filled puzzles.

The Returning Cast

Most of the cast from Season 2 is expected to return for a third season, including Zahn McClarnon as Chief Joe Lephorn, Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito, and Kiowa Gordon as Jim Chee. For Dark Winds Season 3, Deanna Allison will continue in her role as Emma Lephorn, and A. Martinez will return to play Gordon Sena, the acting chief of the Scarborough Police Department. Jenna Elfman will join the cast as FBI Special Agent Sylvia Washington.

New Faces Run Up Against The Law

In addition to the cast of the Kayenta law enforcement community, there will be several new characters added to the Border Patrol unit that Bernadette Manuelito is assigned to in Dark Winds Season 3. Tonantzin Carmelo will appear as Border Patrol Agent Eleanda Garza, Alex Maraz will play Border Patrol Agent Ivan Muñoz, and Terry Serpico will join the cast as Border Patrol Senior Chief Ed Henry.

Other new cast members will include Bruce Greenwood as Tom Spencer, Raoul Max Trujillo as Budge, Derek Hinkey and Shorty Bowlegs, Phil Burke as Michael Halsey, and Christopher Heyerdahl as Dr. Reynolds.

Adapts The Popular Book Series

Based on the book series Leaphorn and Chee by Tony Hillerman, Dark Winds is set in the 1970s in a remote Navajo Nation town. The series covers dark ground, with the pair investigating a series of seemingly unconnected incidents and delving into the sinister depths of their community’s past. Uncovering corruption and conspiracy as they go, Dark Winds Season 3 will enlarge the scope of the series, spreading South to the US-México border.

Dark Detective Series Respects Native American Roots

Series creator Graham Roland, who adapted the stories for television, will be returning for Dark WInds Season 3 and bringing a unique perspective to the classic dark detective series with his Chickasaw roots.

A native of Oklahoma, Graham Roland has a strong track record of bringing adaptations to the screen, including Jack Ryan as well as producing several well-received mystery/thriller series including Lost. Roland has also won several awards for Dark Winds, including the Red Nation Film Award of Excellence for Best Television Series and the Western Heritage Award for Fictional Television Drama.
