R-Rated Dark Comedy Crime Thriller On Hulu Is A Secret Classic With House Of The Dragon Star
Olivia Cooke is currently dominating the screen every week as Alicent Hightower in HBO’s House of the Dragon, which started its second season off with a bang. If you’re looking to see another stellar Cooke performance while you wait for the next episode, then you should check out the 2017 black comedy thriller Thoroughbreds. The film is currently available to stream on Hulu, and it’s worth checking out.
A Teenage Thriller With An Amazing Cast
Thoroughbreds is directed and written by Cory Finley, who makes a stunning directorial debut with a thriller that follows a high school student named Lily who plots to kill her stepfather with the help of her friend, Amanda, and a drug dealer. Dune: Part Two and Furiosa star Anya Taylor-Joy plays Lily while Cooke plays Amanda. Lily’s stepfather is played by Paul Sparks, while the drug dealer is played by the late Anton Yelchin, who passed away in an accident just a couple of weeks after finishing filming.
Box Office Disappointment But A Critical Darling
Thoroughbreds has everything you want from a thriller, with engrossing direction, a taut screenplay, and top-notch performances from the whole cast, especially Cooke, Taylor-Joy, and Yelchin. Unfortunately, the film didn’t get the biggest audience when it was released, only grossing $3 million against a $5 million budget. But that doesn’t mean the film was short on acclaim from those who did see it, with an 88 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Further Success Of Anya Taylor-Joy
Of course, neither of these Thoroughbreds co-stars have had much trouble drawing in viewers for their most recent projects. Anya Taylor-Joy made an appearance in Dune: Part Two as Alia Atreides, who will have a much bigger role if Denis Villeneuve gets to make the third Dune movie adapted from Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah novel. And although her Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga film didn’t perform as well as Fury Road, it was still an incredible film that was highly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike.
Olivia Cooke And House Of The Dragon
Since starring in Thoroughbreds, Olivia Cooke nabbed her biggest role yet in the HBO series House of the Dragon, which is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood novel that chronicles the fall of House Targaryen and the war known as the Dance of Dragons.
The first season was a massive success, drawing in tens of millions of viewers for each episode and earning numerous accolades in the process. While Season 2 took a dip in viewership compared to the huge numbers of the first season, it’s still one of the most-watched shows on TV right now.
Streaming On Hulu
If you’ve enjoyed Olivia Cooke’s performance in House of the Dragon, then you can expect something a little different in Thoroughbreds, as she plays someone who doesn’t experience emotions. While that would be a difficult acting challenge for anyone, Cooke pulls it off with aplomb, and her performance stands out in a movie full of good ones.
You can check out her performance for yourself by streaming Thoroughbreds on Hulu now, and you can catch new episodes of House of the Dragon Season 2 on HBO and Max on Sundays.
