Daredevil: Born Again Is Doubling Down On Violence

Fans of the Marvel series that aired on Netflix several years ago — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist among them — will be thrilled to hear that not only is Daredevil coming back to the screen in Daredevil: Born Again, with all the same actors, but it’s also going to be bigger, better, and more violent, than ever.

By the sounds of it, Daredevil: Born Again, slated for release on Disney+ in March 2025, will stay true to its roots.

Getting The Band Back Together

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, head of streaming, television, and animation Brad Winderbaum promises that Marvel Studios is more than prepared to bloody up our television screens. He notes that, “Some of the most brutal action we’ve ever brought to the screen is coming in Daredevil: Born Again.”

He and the cast, which includes Jon Bernthal, reprising his role as Frank Castle, Vincent D’Onofrio coming back as Fisk, and Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson back as Karen and Foggy, have all chimed in about how the revival of the show pays homage to the Netflix series.

The Series Will Not Be Lacking In The Grit Department

I was a bit worried when the Netflix license to produce these Marvel shows expired and Disney decided to take it all over to its their streaming service. Up to that point, Disney hadn’t really produced anything truly gritty, brutal, or dark. Iron Man, The Avengers, and Spider-Man were all fun, light, and endearing characters.

The darkness was in short supply.

Kingpin Isn’t Done Yet

Why do we need Matt Murdock to be dark? Matt has a troubled past, one that he’s clearly not over considering he’s chosen to play the role of vigilante when he’s not trying cases in a court of law. Add to that the fact that he’s up against Kingpin, Wilson Fisk, and you can’t deny the darkness that Daredevil: Born Again needs to drive that point home.

Wilson Fisk is perhaps one of the most terrifying villains in comic book history. There’s a scene in the Netflix Daredevil series where Fisk repeatedly crushes a man’s head in the door of a car, and it feels visceral, emotional, and horrific. Of course fans were concerned Daredevil: Born Again wouldn’t live up to that history.

Looking To The Past While Moving Forward

It looks like Daredevil: Born Again will both tie into the Netflix series, for those of us who are still hungry for more, and start a new, fresh storyline, which will allow newcomers to fall in love with the show even if they haven’t seen the original. Of course, if you’re reading this, I will tell you, urge you, to watch the first three seasons of Daredevil on Netflix because they’re more than worth your time.

Time To Catch Up On Daredevil

For those still playing catch-up before Daredevil: Born Again premieres, it’s important to remember that Matt Murdock, and his partner Foggy Nelson, are criminal defense attorneys. Karen Page is their secretary who also acts as a bit of a sleuth on the side. Wilson Fisk is the big, overarching bad guy, and Frank Castle is a picture-perfect anti-hero.

All three seasons of Daredevil dealt with harsh histories and realities for almost every character involved, including assault on women, child murder, and kidnapping. There’s also torture of both the physical and psychological kind.

Daredevil: Born Again Coming Soon

It will be interesting to see how Disney+ lives up to these comments that Daredevil: Born Again will be bloodier than ever. And if their streaming shows are any indication, we can have high hopes. After all, Hawkeye and Loki both managed to dip into some dark territory.

Still, it’s time to take it to the next level if there’s any chance we might get Jessica Jones back. In the meantime, we’ll just have to wait until March 2025 to see for ourselves.
