It was great to see Daniel Radcliffe return to his roots when the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Special aired on HBO Max. The entire nearly three-hour special took fans on a much deeper inside look at the cast and their experiences with filming one of the most popular franchises of all time. Now, Radcliffe is set to return to his biggest role yet. He will be playing none other than Weird Al Yankovic in the biopic about his life for the Roku Channel. The biopic, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, will be the first time that Roku has tackled a biopic on their channel, but what better way than to incorporate the best comedic singer of all time.
The above trailer was released by Funny or Die, who is coincidentally also producing the biopic, so expect the same level of craziness to appear in the real Weird Al flick. According to the man himself, “When my last movie UHF came out in 1989, I made a solemn vow to my fans that I would release a major motion picture every 33 years, like clockwork. I’m very happy to say we’re on schedule.”
You may have noticed that isn’t Daniel Radcliffe in the trailer, but Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame. That’s because the trailer doesn’t include any actual footage from the film, but is instead a sketch. It’s definitely going to be great to see how Daniel Radcliffe plans to portray the character, and there is a chance he might be that much more out there than Aaron Paul is in the above trailer. It’s great to see that a sketch is now making its way into a full-fledged film.
The Weird Al biopic script was written by Yankovic and Eric Appel, who will also be directing the film. It is being produced by Funny or Die and Tango. Funny or Die is the comedy network that is owned by famed comedic actor Will Ferrel. Even though the above video was just a sketch that was put together, it might be the kind of silly humor that we should all expect from a biopic that was written by the man in which it is portraying. That is the hope at least. There hasn’t been any more announced cast other than Daniel Radcliffe, but hopefully, there are more big-name stars attached to the project. Weird is set to begin production in early February in Los Angeles.
The Roku synopsis for the film states: “the biopic holds nothing back, exploring every facet of Yankovic’s life, from his meteoric rise to fame with early hits like “Eat It” and “Like a Surgeon” to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story takes audiences on a truly unbelievable journey through Yankovic’s life and career, from gifted child prodigy to the greatest musical legend of all time.” It sure sounds as if the biopic plans to be serious just as much as it plans to be silly as well. Daniel Radcliffe might just be the perfect casting to truly showcase the “weird” in Weird Al.
Although production on the Weird Al story begins in February, there is a chance that we will all have to wait to see Daniel Radcliffe pose as the greatest musician of all time. Expect to see the Weird Al story in early 2023 on the Roku Channel. There haven’t been any revealed plans to release such an amazing biopic in theaters yet, but there should be such a massive draw for this story that the Roku Channel will have to share in the limelight.
