Knives Out was a great mystery movie filled with great performances and a compelling story. But by far one of the most memorable parts was Daniel Craig’s genius-level detective Benoit Blanc and his Southern-fried, Foghorn Leghorn-esque accent. Apparently, it wasn’t so easy for the former James Bond to slip back into that larger-than-life voice for the upcoming sequel Glass Onion.
In an interview with Empire, Daniel Craig mentioned that he needed to work with an accent coach to get back into character, saying “I went away to work with an accent coach for three or four months before we started shooting [Glass Onion]. I’d forgotten the accent and I didn’t want to do a pastiche.” It sounds like those who loved the eccentric Benoit Blanc in the first movie will be happy to know that Craig is doing his best to recapture that magic.
Knives Out was a 2017 film directed by Rian Johnson that was pretty much universally beloved with 97% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 92% from audiences. The whodunnit certainly benefited from Daniel Craig’s turn as the eccentric Blanc, but the rest of the star-studded cast brought their best efforts too. Stars like Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, LaKeith Stanfield, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, and more all brought their A-game. Although Glass Onion will feature a new cast (other than Daniel Craig) and a new mystery, they definitely didn’t skimp on bringing together another dynamite cast. Glass Onion will feature Edward Norton, Jessica Henwick, Ethan Hawke, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Madelyn Cline, Dave Bautista, and Janelle Monae. Rian Johnson returns to write and direct.
Knives Out was a bit of a surprise hit when it came out in 2019. While fans were extremely divided on Rian Johnson’s take on Star Wars with Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017, it seems like people were more than willing to check out an original IP from the writer/director. Knives Out did great at the box office and even nabbed Johnson a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. It seems like Netflix is ready to cash in on some of that success. The streaming giant snapped up the rights for the sequel and even greenlit the development of a third movie that will also see Daniel Craig returning. At this point, the Knives Out universe has become a full-on whodunnit franchise.
Daniel Craig certainly seems to enjoy himself in the role of Benoit Blanc, but it is surprising to see him sign on for another ongoing role so quickly after hanging up the James Bond suit for good. The actor was last seen in 2021’s No Time to Die which marked the end of his tenure as the superspy. People are clamoring to know who will replace Craig, with everyone from Idris Elba to Tom Hardy being thrown out as potential names. In the meantime, Craig is beginning what appears to be another successful, albeit a little less universally known, franchise. It remains to be seen how many times Craig will be willing to return to the Benoit Blanc role, but in the meantime, you can expect to see Glass Onion in select theaters and on Netflix when it’s released on December 23, 2022.
