A former Dancing with the Stars contestant and social media influencer has been arrested in North Carolina on some pretty serious charges. According to TMZ and confirmed by Deadline, Hayes Grier has been brought in by police in Charlotte on assault and robbery charges. The accusations are quite serious and at least one person appears very badly injured. Details are still emerging about this case.
According to the Mecklenburg County arrest records, the Dancing with the Stars was arrested following the report that he had violently assaulted someone and stole their phone. These were felony charges in North Carolina and if sentenced could carry years of jail time. Besides the assault and robbery charges, police have also added charges of conspiracy. Apparently, the alleged incident involved a 24-year-old man who was severely beaten and eventually hospitalized. Grier is accused of putting him in this state and also stealing the man’s cell phone.
The 21-year-old Hayes Grier gained notoriety after posting Vine videos 6-7 years ago. He developed a following online and it vaulted him onto Dancing with the Stars back in 2015. It was the 21st season of the show and Grier joined other celebrities like Gary Busey, Paula Deen, Nick Carter, Chaka Khan, and Bindi Irwin the eventual winner. Grier was the fifth contestant eliminated. Other contestants included singer Andy Grammer, Alexa and Carlos PenaVega, Tamar Braxton, Kim Zolciak-Biermann, and Victor Espinosa.
While Vine and Dancing with the Stars were looking like they would vault Grier on more of a celebrity track, that hasn’t completely taken hold. He has had some other different projects, though most failed to find a meaningful footing. He had a role in the first season of the Hulu show Freakish. Other internet celebrities and influencers took part in the scripted show about a group of high school students trapped inside their school when there is a chemical explosion and the town goes the crazy mutant route. Predictably, it was canceled after one season.
One place the Dancing with the Stars contestant has been able to catch on is with Verizon and their streaming show Top Grier. The show follows Hayes in unscripted comedy moments that have tried to highlight his personality. It has run for a number of different seasons on the platform’s Go90 service. The show has a heavily branded approach looking to capitalize on the massive social media following Grier brings.
Again, Hayes Grier was vaulted to his chance to compete on Dancing with the Stars through his social media fame. He currently has 3.6 million Twitter followers and 5.6 Instagram followers. With postings that follow something like everyday life, there is little controversy in his brand of engagement. As of this posting, there are no further details on what precipitated the alleged incident or the status of the victim who is apparently still in the hospital. More details are sure to emerge over the coming days in what could be a truly tragic set of events if the victim does not recover.
