Dakota Johnson previously admitted that she found herself navigating an approximate 10-year gap with her Madame Web co-stars, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, and Isabela Merced. “I love them. And they annoy me. And I love them,” she explained of the on-set dynamics. She also revealed that the trio had a group chat called “The Boo Crew” that she was not invited to join.

“I haven’t actually seen the movie. I probably won’t… I don’t know when I’ll see it… someday.”

The actress humorously pointed out that her exclusion might be due to her status as a millennial, quipping, “I’m older than them, and they make sure that I’m aware of that.” Despite this exclusion, Dakota Johnson emphasized a sisterly dynamic among the Madame Web cast, revealing the nuanced relationships that existed both on and off the set.

In a separate interview, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, and Isabela Merced confirmed the existence of the group chat but were quick to dispel any notion of ill will towards Dakota Johnson. Sweeney, who had been a fan of Johnson since her Fifty Shades of Grey days, expressed excitement about finally meeting her on set.

Set in the Spider-Man universe, Madame Web tells the story of Manhattan paramedic Cassandra “Cassie” Webb (Dakota Johnson), who gains psychic abilities following a near-death experience.

O’Connor praised Dakota Johnson’s leadership, describing her as “grounded, honest, and calm,” which created a comfortable atmosphere on the Madame Web set. Merced affectionately referred to Johnson as “like a big sister,” highlighting the positive and supportive relationships between the cast despite the playful intergenerational banter.

Set in the Spider-Man universe, Madame Web tells the story of Manhattan paramedic Cassandra “Cassie” Webb (Dakota Johnson), who gains psychic abilities following a near-death experience. Navigating her newfound powers, Cassie must confront her past while protecting three young women with powerful futures from a deadly adversary.

Directed by S.J. Clarkson, the film also features Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman, Celeste O’Connor as Martha “Mattie” Franklin/Spider-Woman, Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon/Arana, and Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims. Despite producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura deciding to craft Madame Web as a unique standalone project, the film has been poorly received.

Madame Web officially ranked below 2023’s The Marvels, which opened at $46.1 million, marking Madame Web as one of the lowest-earning superhero films in recent history.

The latest installment in the Sony Spider-Man Universe failed to live up to expectations at the box office. It debuted in second place with a total of $25.8 million after a six-day run over Valentine’s Day and President’s Day. The lackluster opening painted a grim picture for Dakota Johnson’s Casandra Webb and her team of young spider-women.

Projections estimated an opening weekend between $25 million and $35 million, and the final figure of $25.8 million marked Madame Web as a miss rather than a hit within the SSU franchise. The film even fell short of the 2022 release Morbius, which opened at $39 million. Both 2018’s Venom and 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage opened with $80.3 million and $90.1 million, respectively,

Additionally, the film officially ranked below 2023’s The Marvels, which opened at $46.1 million, marking Madame Web as one of the lowest-earning superhero films in recent history. The disappointment surrounding the Dakota Johnson film’s financial reception raises questions about the franchise’s future.
