Our Daisy Ridley Star Wars Scoop Confirmed By Lucasfilm
Lucasfilm has confirmed our exclusive report that a new Daisy Ridley Star Wars film is in the works.
Five months ago, we exclusively reported that Daisy Ridley would be returning to Star Wars to star in her very own movie following Rey, her up-and-coming Jedi character first introduced in The Force Awakens. Now Lucasfilm has confirmed our scoop (via Variety) that Ridley will indeed star in the first Star Wars movie since The Rise of Skywalker was released in 2019. The studio also confirmed that Ms. Marvel’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy would be directing the feature, and Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) will pen the script.
So far, no details have been disclosed on what the Daisy Ridley Star Wars sequel will be about. Most likely, the story will continue chronologically from The Rise of Skywalker and will be the first project to do so in years since all of the series the franchise has put out since 2019 have taken place during past events. It is also unclear if Rey will be the main protagonist or if she will be more of a mentor to a new character, like Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker was to her during The Last Jedi.
Even though the Star Wars universe takes place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Daisy Ridley’s new Star Wars movie is stepping into the future by achieving new milestones in the production world. Obaid-Chinoy will be both the first woman and the first person of color to direct a Star Wars movie. The filmmaker, who is from Pakistan, has already become a prestigious artist, having won two Academy Awards for the documentaries Saving Face (2011) and A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness (2015), and she’s already stepped into the Disney world having directed multiple episodes of Ms. Marvel on Disney+.
Although Lucasfilm has announced the new Daisy Ridley movie, many are skeptical if the feature will make it all the way to the theaters. It’s been a rocky road so far, with several Star Wars projects making it years into development before getting completely canceled by the studio.
For years, Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins was meant to write and direct Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, which was supposed to be the first post-Rise of Skywalker movie. However, after years of zero progress, the film was eventually tossed in the scrap heap. Additionally, Kevin Feige, head of Marvel, was supposed to helm an unknown Star Wars feature, but the project has been put on hold indefinitely.
Even this Daisy Ridley Star Wars movie has had to maneuver through some turbulence, with the original screenwriters (Damon Lindelof of HBO Watchmen fame and Justin Britt-Gibson from Counterpart) abandoning the project only a few months ago before Knight stepped in.
In our exclusive report, we also said that Lindelof wanted Regina King from Watchmen to appear in the new Star Wars movie with Daisy Ridley. While Lucasfilm has not confirmed either way if King is a part of the film, and it is unclear if Lindelof leaving the project has affected the studio’s discussions with the actress, it is possible that The Harder They Fall actress could still appear in the new movie. If King does become a part of the project, she will likely play an action role next to Ridley since the actress has ample experience in this area.
Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars movie is not the only upcoming feature in the works for the franchise. Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) also has a project in the works for the galaxy far, far away, in which the What We Do In The Shadows star plans to both direct and act. Shawn Levy also has a Star Wars project in the works, set to begin after the director finishes up Deadpool 3.
