R-Rated Crime Thriller On Max Is The Best Romance Of The Year

By Britta DeVore | Published

Max is certainly not hurting for good content. Over the weekend, the streamer raked in viewers by the droves thanks to the Season 2 finale of House of the Dragon, and with titles like the Dune franchise, Twister, Jaws, and more now available, subscribers have a lot of different options right at their fingertips. If you’re looking for an action-filled thriller mixed with a queer love story and leveled up with incredible performances, the platform has the exact thing you need, as Love Lies Bleeding is now available.

Another Hit From A24

Love Lies Bleeding can be found by heading to Max’s A24 channel, where the studio hosts a wide array of other sought-after streamable titles like Midsommar, The Iron Claw, The Lighthouse, and more. The movie features a stellar call sheet of recognizable talents like Kristen Stewart (the Twilight franchise), Katy O’Brian (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania), Ed Harris (The Rock), Dave Franco (Now You See Me), and more. Together, the cast expertly executes a story of love, revenge, and murder in a middle-of-nowhere Texas town.

An Unexpected Romance

Set in 1989, Love Lies Bleeding follows a bodybuilder named Jackie (O’Brian) who has just turned up in a small town in Texas as a stop-over stay on her way to a competition in Las Vegas. It’s there that she meets a gym manager named Lou (Stewart), with the pair quickly falling for one another. Unbeknownst to Lou, Jackie has landed a job at the shooting range belonging to Lou’s estranged father, Lou Sr. (Harris), with whom Lou has a very complicated relationship.

Bodybuilding And Murder

Things get even more complicated when Lou and Jackie begin using steroids to help the latter bulk up for the big event. As things start to unravel and Lou’s dysfunctional and often violent family dynamics come into play, the couple finds themselves at the center of a murder case with no one to trust but one another. Not only is Love Lies Bleeding an action-packed thrill ride from beginning to end, but it also has one of the craziest final scenes of the year.

Loved By Critics

Rose Glass is the director behind Love Lies Bleeding, with the pulse-pounding thriller marking her sophomore feature-length production. Before she hit audiences with the one-two punch of Stewart and O’Brian’s topsy-turvy relationship in the middle of the gun country, the filmmaker blew our minds with the 2019 psychological horror flick Saint Maud.

After celebrating its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival back in January of this year, Love Lies Bleeding opened in the U.S. on March 8. By the time its cinematic run came to an end, Glass’ second production had earned $12.5 million and a lot of critical acclaim.

Streaming On Max

Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds bragging rights of a 94 percent approval rating. As of right now, Glass hasn’t announced when she’ll return to the director’s chair, but we certainly hope that when she does, she’ll hit us with something as powerful as Love Lies Bleeding and Saint Maud. See what the fuss is all about as the thriller is now streaming on Max.
