Crime Drama Series On Max Gives Superstar Actress An All-Time Role

By Britta DeVore | Published

Kate Winslet is an Academy Award, Grammy Award, two-time Emmy Award, five-time BAFTA Award, and five-time Golden Globe Award-winner – is there anything she can’t do? The easy answer here is “no,” and if you thought the actress’s performances in movies like Revolutionary Road and Titanic were masterful, we’d love to direct your attention to HBO’s Mare of Easttown. Even though the miniseries came out three years ago, it still holds up as a modern classic crime drama that gives Winslet a complex character to deal with.

A Modern Murder Mystery Miniseries

Mare of Easttown

The seven-part series is a loaded one with plenty of troubling family dynamics plaguing Kate Winslet’s titular Mare Sheehan as well as a murder case that she, as the town’s leading detective, is tasked with solving. Set in a fictional town just outside of Pennsylvania, Mare of Easttown follows the fallout of the murder of a teenage mother which may be connected to the case of a missing girl that happened a year before. The leader in both cases, Mare is who the town looks to for answers but she can barely keep her head above water.

A Difficult Work/Life Balance

As she searches for answers surrounding both the new and old case, Mare also has plenty of pressure coming from home, where she and the rest of her family are struggling with the suicide of her son. Recently divorced, Mare and her ex-husband are essentially neighbors, although they struggle to get along especially following their son’s death. Throughout Mare of Easttown, audiences watch as Mare attempts to get her own house in order while also fixing the problems of the village.

A Well-Written Story With A Powerhouse Cast

At its heart, Mare of Easttown is a wonderfully done crime drama with a well-penned story and an ensemble cast who easily keep up with the multi-award-winning Kate Winslet. The show also sees performances from Jean Smart (Hacks), Julianne Nicholson (Dream Scenario), Evan Peters (American Horror Story), Angourie Rice (Mean Girls), Guy Pearce (Memento), and Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus). The only glaring problem with the series is Winslet’s take on an Eastern Pennsylvania accent which leans towards quite an exaggeration.

But don’t take our word for it – check out what the critics have to say about Mare of Easttown as well. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series of yesteryear is Certified Fresh as it currently holds a 95% approval rating. The show was one of the biggest ones to land on HBO, raking in impressive viewership numbers that even resulted in Max’s servers crashing upon the release of the finale. So, if this will be your first time watching it, maybe be happy that it’s taken you this long to come around and that you weren’t kept in the dark on finale night.

The title was also a big hit at other big industry events like the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
