Controversial X-Men Star Wanted To Return In Deadpool & Wolverine
A large part of what made Deadpool & Wolverine feel like a love letter to the previous era of Marvel films was all the cameos, ranging from the Human Torch to Blade and even Elektra. And, of course, the constant presence of Wolverine was an ongoing reminder of just how great those early X-Men movies were (right up until they weren’t). As it turns out, one of Logan’s old friends nearly joined the party: Halle Berry says that Blake Lively asked if she would return as Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, but even after Berry said “yes,” Ryan Reynolds never invited her to return.
Storm Would Have Made For An Interesting Cameo
While watching the movie, it was admittedly difficult not to think of Storm, especially once we see the former Magneto lackey, Toad. Berry’s performance as this mighty mutant was always subject to a bit of ridicule after a scene in the first X-Men movie where she dramatically asked if the villain knew what happened to a toad after getting struck by lightning before over-delivering the insane punchline: “the same thing that happens to everything else.”
Still, Halle Berry’s performance as the character improved in subsequent films, and it would have been very fun to see her interact with Toad yet again in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Halle Berry Never Got The Casting Call From Reynolds
As for why we didn’t see her return, there seems to be a bit of drama behind this story. According to Halle Berry, she ran into Blake Lively (who, notably, is married to Deadpool & Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds) at a Marc Jacobs fashion show, and the Gossip Girl veteran asked “Would you ever be in my husband’s movie as Storm?” Berry responded that she would certainly say yes if Reynolds asked her to appear in the film but that he never called.
Maybe Deadpool Needs To Switch To Mint Mobile
To her credit, Halle Berry doesn’t seem overly angry or resentful about not getting invited to appear in Deadpool & Wolverine, but simply shared this anecdote when she was asked whether there were ever any plans to include her in the film. Still, the story is enough to make us wonder why Reynolds never gave her the invite. It’s possible, of course, that Lively was just making conversation or entertaining a hypothetical scenario, and it’s equally possible that Reynolds simply got too busy to pick up the phone.
Perhaps Storm Was Too Powerful For The Story?
Perhaps the simplest explanation for why Halle Berry’s Storm didn’t return in Deadpool & Wolverine is that her character is just too powerful (at least, when well-written). The movie quickly killed off the super-powered Human Torch, and that left us with mostly down-to-earth heroes like Blade, Elektra, and Gambit, people who might struggle against a bunch of well-armed, generic soldiers. Storm is a literal goddess who could have potentially nuked Cassandra Nova’s base with a single bolt of lightning, and writing around her powers might have proven difficult.
Thinking About What Could Have Been…
No matter the reason why she didn’t get the invite, we can’t help but feel a bit disappointed that Halle Berry didn’t get to appear in Deadpool & Wolverine. Storm is one of the best Marvel characters, and she was treated very poorly by previous directors like Bryan Singer and Brett Ratner. These two found out the hard way what happens to a character struck by awful writing: the same thing that happens to everyone else.
