The New Constantine To Be Recast As A Star Wars Actor?

There is a new Constantine series coming to HBO Max. While this is still relatively fresh news, everyone wants to know who will be playing John Constantine this time around. So far, we’ve heard that the HBO Max series is looking to cast an actor that is both young and a person of color. This information came from reports of a logline during production. Previously, the character has been played by Keanu Reeves, who was around 40 years old at the time, and Matt Ryan, who was around 35. It’s been surmised this means that HBO Max is looking for an actor of about 25 to 30 years old and that while they may be a known entity, they could be looking for an unknown actor at this point.
Now, a new rumor from insider Daniel Richtman says the production company has its eye on Oscar Isaac of Star Wars fame. The actor was born in Guatemala and has both Guatemalan and Cuban heritage. While Isaac meets the diverse part of what the studio reportedly wants for the part, the actor is currently 42 years old, so he’s in the same age range as previous actors who’ve played John Constantine. The age part seems like it is probably fairly central to the story HBO Max is working on. If they want the character to be at an earlier point than we’ve seen in the past, it would be important for him to look younger. However, there is the chance that the story has changed and the age part isn’t as central as we once thought.
It’s also possible that they feel Oscar Isaac could play a 30-year-old character. To be fair, his smile does help de-age him a bit in many photos. Still, recent images of him from the upcoming movie Dune certainly don’t put him at 30 years old. This is the magic of Hollywood though, right?
The HBO Max Constantine series is being produced by Bad Robot Productions, the company J.J. Abrams owns. So, there is a tie from Abrams to Oscar Isaac through Star Wars. Abrams worked on two of the Star Wars films that Isaac was in. That helps add some more background to this possible rumor from Richtman. Other than the fact that Isaac is older than we previously believed the studio was looking for, Oscar Isaac could make a great John Constantine. Put a trenchcoat on him and let him lean into that tortured character.
Will Oscar Isaac have time in his schedule for a new television series with Constantine? Currently, the actor has a lot of upcoming work. Some of it is simply delayed productions due to the pandemic, like Dune. However, he is also in pre-production for the Disney+ series Moon Knight. He also has a couple movies coming up with Armaggedon Time and Metal Gear Solid. If Oscar Isaac isn’t our John Constantine, who will be? Previously, outlets have speculated that actors like John Boyega or Regé-Jean Page could be good choices for the part. However, there’s no knowing who else the studio may have their eye on at this point. We will have to watch and see if more news on John Constantine and Oscar Isaac come to light soon.
