When it came to Deadpool & Wolverine, there was a ton to get excited about. Ryan Reynolds in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hugh Jackman returning, and oh, the possibility of cameos galore. On the latter front, the movie didn’t disappoint. And our Giant Freakin Robot exclusive scoop that Chris Evans would return as Johnny Storm/ Human Torch was right on the money.

We reported, all the way back in 2022, that Chris Evans was in discussions to reprise this role, which he had played in the first iteration of the Fantastic Four in 2005.

While many would know him best as Steve Rogers/ Captain America in the near-entirety of the first Avengers timeline, getting him back to this part in Deadpool & Wolverine was right on the nose and perfectly in line with the tone of the film. No one was taking themselves all that seriously, so seeing Chris Evans in his original superhero part fit the bill.

In Deadpool & Wolverine, the title characters come across Chris Evans as Human Torch in The Void and originally think he’s Captain America. There’s a hilarious payoff to this encounter, too, with Evans getting back into the character’s powers with a little “Flame On!” announcement.

That being said, it isn’t all hilarious for Chris Evans in Deadpool & Wolverine, considering he does come across the film’s villain, Cassandra Nova, and she isn’t too into him being there, well, at all.

Deadpool & Wolverine had plenty of nods to Marvel fandom and the universe overall, bringing in cameos from a number of different iterations over the years, as well as some new faces. There were plenty of folks showing up in this one, some completely out of nowhere.

This was to be expected, considering that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman were making their first Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances after coming over from 20th Century Fox.

The Deadpool & Wolverine tongue-in-cheek tone was the perfect place for this to happen, especially against the backdrop of Multiverse “problems” the MCSU has been building for years.

Those aren’t soon to stop either, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the fold later in this phase. He’ll be taking on the role of Doctor Doom, one of the big bands of the timeline, now that Jonathan Majors is out as Kang the Conqueror.

Chris Evans returning as Johnny Storm / Human Torch could mean that we eventually see Captain America return as well. Or at least we know he’s open to still showing his face around these parts.

Whether it happens remains to be seen, but considering things are building to Avengers: Secret Wars at the end of this phase, it’s entirely possible we see Chris Evans again.
