The Best R-Rated Comedy Is Coming Back With A New Movie?
Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrne are willing to make a sequel to Bridesmaids.
If all of the original, amazing actresses from the R-rated comedy Bridesmaids were interested in doing a sequel, then they would definitely create another one, according to The Hollywood Reporter. While there isn’t anything in production, several of the cast members, including Rose Byrne and Melissa McCarthy, have expressed an interest in creating a Bridesmaid sequel or a whole new project together.
The hilarious and raunchy film features the perfect cast of female characters who aren’t afraid to hold anything back, bringing audiences to tears with their improvised banter and subtle humor. The wonderful cast included Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Ellie Kemper as bridesmaids for Maya Rudolph’s upcoming wedding. Kristen Wiig plays the best friend and maid of honor to Maya Rudolph’s character, but her attempt to impress the wedding party and outshine a new friend puts a strain on their friendship.
When Bridesmaids was released back in 2011, it became the highest-grossing R-rated female comedy of all time, surpassing the previous top movie, Sex and the City. It’s also the most financially successful Judd Apatow-produced film, beating out The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Funny People, and This is 40. And on top of that, it’s one of the top films directed by Paul Feig, who also directed The Heat, Spy, and the all-female Ghostbusters.
While Rose Byrne enjoyed her experience filming Bridesmaids, calling it “magical” and “beloved,” and would be interested in a sequel, she does feel that it would be difficult to outdo the first film. Since Bridesmaids ended so perfectly, it could be difficult to create a sequel that doesn’t feel forced or irrelevant, which usually ends up in a flop at the box office (like Zoolander 2 or Shazam 2).
The Little Mermaid star Melissa McCarthy agrees with Rose Byrne that Bridesmaids was a wonderful experience, saying, “that group of women was the most magical thing ever.” Given the opportunity, she would absolutely create a sequel to the female comedy. The actress played Megan, an overly chatty but passionate and caring friend who would gladly tell anyone she just met about the time she took a hard, violent fall off a cruise ship and broke a lot of her shit.
Kristen Wiig, who wrote Bridesmaids with Annie Mumolo, may feel differently from her former co-stars. In 2014, she told Ellen DeGeneres that there would not be a sequel to the comedy, saying that it ended just fine and didn’t need a sequel. However, now that it has been over a decade since the first film came out, maybe she could change her mind.
Bridesmaids has become a cult classic for men and women alike who love to share the endless quotes and memes from the film. If you’ve never seen it or want to watch it for the twentieth time, then you can find it on Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and several other streaming platforms. As for Bridesmaids 2, we will have to wait and see if all the lovely ladies will come together and create another amazing film.
