The Clint Eastwood-starring and Sergio Leone-directed Western classic A Fistful Of Dollars is next in line for the remake treatment. Euro Gang Entertainment is teaming up with Enzo Sisti and Jolly Film to bring the remake to life. Jolly Film produced the original movie, so there’s some lineage there to help reassure wary fans.

A Remake Decades In The Making

A Fistful of Dollars follows a gunslinger who pits two rival families vying for control of the town of San Miguel against each other. The film is credited as helping to launch the spaghetti western genre and would make Eastwood a star. It’s understandable that the success of the movie would make Hollywood want to make A Fistful of Dollars remake, but it’s surprising it’s coming so long after the film’s release.

The Original Launched A Trilogy

A Fistful of Dollars launched The Man with No Name trilogy, which included the equally iconic A Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Presumably, if the A Fistful of Dollars remake is successful, we could see remakes of the rest of the trilogy. Of course, the remake is going to have some massive shoes to fill and will have to impress if it’s going to make fans of the original happy.

Of course, fans of A Fistful of Dollars might know that it’s actually an official remake of Akira Kurosawa’s film Yojimbo. While there’s good reason to be tired of the Hollywood remake machine, there’s always a chance that the remake could be a worthy endeavor. After all, the movie was made back in the ’60s, so it’s possible a more modern approach might be worth watching.

Clint Eastwood’s Retirement

As for now, there aren’t too many details about the A Fistful of Dollars remake. There’s no start date for filming, and neither is a director, a writer, or a cast attached. Clint Eastwood recently retired, so they missed the boat of him potentially directing the remake. Perhaps his son, Scott Eastwood, could end up stepping into the role of the Man with No Name.

The Original Is Also A Remake

Interestingly, this A Fistful of Dollars remake is the first Sergio Leone remake from the director’s small yet iconic directing filmography. Leone made two iconic trilogies in his career: the Man with No Name trilogy and the Once Upon a Time trilogy. The films have gone untouched until now, presumably because taking on such monumentally iconic movies would be an intimidating undertaking for any studio.

The Project Is In Good Hands

The good news is that the producing team behind the A Fistful of Dollars remake has years of experience and prestige going for them. Gianni Nunnari of Euro Gang Entertainment has executive produced or produced films like The Departed, Se7en, the 300 franchise, and more. Meanwhile, Enzo Sisti has been an executive producer or producer on projects like The Talented Mr. Ripley, The English Patient, The Passion of the Christ, and The Life Aquatic.

It seems like the A Fistful of Dollars remake is in good hands, but that doesn’t always mean the final product will be good. We’ll just have to wait and see as more news comes out about the project. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you updated on this and other upcoming remakes.
