Civil War Poster Reveals Terrifying Sci-Fi Thriller From Incredible Director
Alex Garland is one of the best sci-fi directors/writers of the modern era, and A24 recently unveiled the first poster for his next film titled Civil War (via Dark Horizons). Garland, best known for his work on Ex Machina and Annihilation, directed and wrote the film, which seems like it will marry his penchant for sci-fi with a more action-oriented direction than his usual work.
It doesn’t hurt that Civil War has a fantastic cast that includes Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Karl Glusman, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonica T. Gibbs, and Jess Matney.
Civil War is set in the not-so-distant future of the United States and is being described as a blend of a road movie, satirical war film, and shooter. The plot details are currently being kept under wraps, meaning it’s probably one of the movies that you want to go into knowing as little as possible. The poster does provide us with some details of what to expect, with snipers strategically positioned on the torch of the Statue of Liberty.
When Does Civil War Come Out?
The film is produced by A24 and DNA Films’ Gregory Goodman, Andrew Macdonald, and Allon Reich. While we don’t have a straight-up release date for Civil War, it is confirmed that the film is looking to hit a Spring 2024 release. It is also going to be screened in IMAX, meaning we can probably expect some visual bombast and incredible cinematography that should definitely be witnessed on the biggest screen possible.
We’ll have to see if Civil War can be another critically acclaimed feather in Alex Garland’s cap, as he received incredible critical acclaim for his directing and writing on Ex Machina and Annihilation. His previous effort was the 2022 horror film Men, which was met with more mixed reviews than his previous efforts. Garland also has quite a few writing credits to his name for films such as Never Let Me Go, Sunshine, and Dredd.
Alex Garland also helmed the criminally underseen FX series Devs, which is currently streaming on Hulu if you want something to hold you over until Civil War hits theaters. Garland also has delved into the world of video games as a co-writer on the game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Garland has certainly cemented himself as a visionary storyteller across a variety of mediums, so his next film will definitely be one of the most anticipated A24 releases of the year.
With films like Civil War, A24 is likely going to have another incredible year of film releases on its hands. But before looking to 2024, the studio still has festival darlings like The Iron Claw and The Zone of Interest to release before the year is over.
A24 will add these films to its already incredible 2023 film output that included films like Past Lives, Priscilla, Dream Scenario, and the newly restored cut of The Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense concert film.
2024 is looking to be a crowded year for great movies. However, the combination of A24 and Alex Garland is always a recipe that should make Civil War stand out. Make sure to watch out for its Spring release window.
