When it’s time for a Christopher Nolan movie that means it’s time to head to the theaters. Few other directors have the ability to draw out crowds for original movies the way Nolan does and his next one is about to take a trip into the biopic genre. He’s done historical work in the past though this one looks a bit different than really anything on his resume. Oppenheimer is set to take us back to one of the most consequential sequences of events we’ve ever had, a time and group of people who shaped the history of the world though not necessarily for the better. And now, we are getting a chance to see the first trailer for the movie, but you’ll have to be in the right place over the weekend.
According to Variety, Christopher Nolan and company are releasing the Oppenheimer teaser trailer before screenings of Jordan Peele’s Nope which hits theaters this weekend. Supposedly, the voice-over for the teaser trailer is provided by Emily Blunt who has a major role in the film, and then there is a ticking clock showing the amount of time until the flick hits the big screen (a little under a year). Robert Downey Jr.’s voice is also heard before there are shots of fire, presumably from a bomb blast and then a shot of Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer. The whole thing only lasts a few seconds but it is meant to get across the idea that there are great stakes here with this Christopher Nolan movie and this story.
Oppenheimer from Christopher Nolan is set to tell the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer who is considered the father of the atomic bomb. He was head of the Los Alamos Laboratory facility that was tasked with creating the bomb as part of the Manhattan Project. They were able to bring the project to completion and the output was deployed in Japan at the end of World War II. The movie is set to cover the time period during the 1940s that saw Oppenheimer come from the University of California, Berkeley to oversee the project.
And as far as casts go, this might be the most stacked one Christopher Nolan has ever worked with. Heck, this might be one of the most talented ever. In addition to Cillian Murphy as well as the aforementioned Blunt who plays Kitty Oppenheimer and RDJ as Lewis Strauss, there are a number of other notables. Matt Damonopp plays Leslie Groves, the man who directed the Manhattan Project, and Florence Pugh plays Jean Tatlock. Others include, but aren’t limited to Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Kenneth Branagh, David Dastmalchian, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, and Casey Affleck. Again, this is about as cool a who’s who of Hollywood as you’ll ever see in a movie. Christopher Nolan knows how to recruit.
Again, this is only a teaser trailer for Oppenheimer coming this weekend. There’s still quite a bit of time before we get the actual movie. It’s set to release on July 21st of next year. And considering Christopher Nolan, the subject matter, and the cast, this could be an absolute event.
