Great Scott! Christopher Lloyd is teasing a possible Back to the Future “surprise,” leading to speculation from fans that the actor could once again don the white jumpsuit as Doc Brown. In a deliberately-vague tweet, Lloyd warned fans that the “future holds something very special for you,” while also saying he can’t reveal exactly what it is just yet.
It’s been more than 30 years since Christopher Lloyd portrayed Dr. Emmett Brown in a Back to the Future movie, for 1990’s Back to the Future Part III, and calls from fans for he and Michael J. Fox (who played Marty McFly, in case you forgot) to reprise their roles in a film has only gotten stronger. However, all involved, including producers, have been adamant about not adding any films to the trilogy.
Nevertheless, fans remain hopeful that we will somehow see Marty and Doc continue their adventures, and the tweet is igniting Future fandom that it could actually be happening this time.
Lloyd has reprised the Doc Brown role over the years for various projects and appearances, usually promotional videos, a Universal Studios ride, and a short for the 30th anniversary Blu-ray box set. Christopher Lloyd did play Doc Brown in a short-lived Back to the Future cartoon series from 1991 to 1992.
Perhaps the most notable reunion, and perhaps the best one we’ll ever get, occurred on October 21, 2015, the date Marty and Doc went into the future to save Marty’s son from going to jail. Fox and Lloyd reprised their roles that night in a sketch for ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, thrilling fans and poking fun at the fact that the future turned out to be not as technically advanced as the movie thought it would.
Unfortunately, Michael J. Fox has been battling Parkinson’s Disease since his diagnosis at age 29, and he recently revealed that his symptoms have worsened in recent years, resulting in multiple broken bones and ending his acting career. He and Christopher Lloyd reunited on-stage for a panel at the recent New York Comic Con, where the extent of Fox’s symptoms were clearly seen. While it was a touching moment for all, it was a sobering one for those hoping that Fox and Lloyd would act together once more.
While fans have mostly resisted the idea of a Back to the Future reboot, with all new actors, it’s an idea endorsed by Michael J. Fox himself. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, he revealed his idea for a reboot, featuring a gender-swapped Marty. “They should do it with a girl as Marty,” Fox said, adding “There’s something about (the films) that connects with people on every level. I just feel like it will come around again.”
Despite no movement on the Back to the Future sequel front, Christopher Lloyd has been busy on a number of projects. He most recently appeared in Spirit Halloween, a children’s comedy that premiered in October and is available to view now on video on demand and DVD. Earlier this year, it was announced that Lloyd would appear as a guest star in season three of The Mandalorian, which has already wrapped filming and premieres in February of 2023. Lloyd’s role in the series has not been specified.
