Christina Applegate Emmy Appearance Brings Fans To Tears
Paying homage to all of the wonderful sitcoms and television shows of yesteryear, last night’s Emmy Award celebrations showcased casts from classic titles like Cheers, American Horror Story, and Ally McBeal. But, it was an early on in the evening appearance by Married… with Children’s Christina Applegate that brought the house down. After battling multiple sclerosis for the last few years, the actress’s appearance moved her colleagues and friends to an uproar of applause.
Making her way out from the wings, Christina Applegate proudly walked across the stage with her cane in hand, as the theme music for Married … with Children played in the background. When she reached the microphone, she was met by the evening’s host, Black-ish and Law & Order’s Anthony Anderson. Once there, Applegate appeared to take in the overwhelming moment as the entire theater gave her a standing ovation, with cheers filling the air.
Although emotions were running high, Christina Applegate kept her sense of humor through every beat of her monologue, cracking a few jokes at her own expense. That is until she spoke about what she said would likely be her final role, Dead to Me. The Netflix dark comedy series saw Applegate star alongside Linda Cardellini and James Marsden for three seasons and would land Applegate three Emmy nominations as well as a nod at the Golden Globes.
Bringing up her fond memories of working on the stages and sets of Hollywood since her very early years as a baby on Days of Our Lives, Christina Applegate shed a few tears thinking about the pivotal moments that led her to take the evening’s stage. When it was time to pass the microphone, Applegate announced the winner for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, an honor that would go to The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri. Greeting the up-and-coming performer with a huge smile and an even bigger hug, Applegate left a memorable stamp on Edebiri’s big moment.
Although her face can be seen in supporting roles and the backgrounds of productions as early as 1972, it wasn’t until her breakthrough role as the snarky and sassy Kelly Bundy in Married… with Children that Christina Applegate rose to prominence. For 11 seasons, Applegate’s star grew as the daughter and sister in the Bundy family, a part that she played opposite Ed O’Neill, Katey Sagal, and David Faustino.
Since then, Christina Applegate has appeared in a slew of familiar shows and films, including Jesse, Friends, Samantha Who?, and the aforementioned Dead to Me. As for her contributions to cinema, Applegate has leaned into both her dramatic and comedic chops in projects such as Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, The Sweetest Thing, Bad Moms, and the Anchorman franchise.
For now, it does seem as though Christina Applegate’s time memorizing lines and blocking positions has come to an end as the actress focuses on her health. Applegate’s multiple sclerosis diagnosis was a particularly hard pill to swallow as she had previously defeated cancer. While she may not grace our TV screens in any new projects down the line, seeing the joyful actress bring down the house with laughter and applause was certainly a magical one at this year’s Emmys.
