The Chris Hemsworth starrer, Thor: Love and Thunder, is currently in the process of additional photography in Malibu after wrapping production in June. And thanks to set-stalking paparazzi, fans have their first look at Christian Bale as Gorr The Butcher.
The images come by way of the Daily Mail and show Christian Bale on the movie set in his full silver costume, including facial prosthetics. The actor’s supervillain ensemble includes flowing, hooded sleeveless robes that could be seen fluttering in the breeze as he crossed the set.
Created by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic, Gorr The Butcher made his Marvel debut in the pages of 2013’s Thor: God of Thunder #1. In the comics, Christian Bale’s character was born on a harsh, nameless world populated by beings who strongly believe that Gods exist. Outcast by his tribe for being a non-believer, Gorr decides to destroy the gods after learning that they did nothing to save his family from being killed. After acquiring All-Black the Necrosword, a weapon forged from the head of a Celestial that allows him to fly, Gorr vows to seek out and destroy the Asgardians. As such, he has a history of run-ins with Thor and Loki over the years.
Thor: Love and Thunder marks Gorr’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as Christian Bale’s return to the superhero movie genre after playing Bruce Wayne/Batman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy from 2005 to 2012. Thor: Love and Thunder is the latest installment in the Thor franchise and is intended to be a direct sequel to 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. It is also the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is directed by Taika Waititi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
Starring alongside Chris Hemsworth as Thor, are Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. Other Marvel stars making their return are Chris Pratt, Jaimie Alexander, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn and Jeff Goldblum. Academy Award winner Christian Bale will portray Gorr the God Butcher, and Russell Crowe will make a cameo appearance as Zeus, the King of the Olympians.
Although plot details have been kept firmly under wraps, the Christian Bale Thor movie is said to be loosely based on Jason Aaron’s run on The Mighty Thor in which Jane Foster takes up the mantle and powers of Thor. An additional story arc will focus on Valkyrie’s for a queen to rule Asgard by her side, with Tessa Thompson implying that Thor: Love and Thunder will make her character’s queer sexuality canon.
The film may also incorporate elements of Marvel’s 2014 Original Sin storyline, which explains how Thor lost his powers. According to comic book lore, the God of Thunder became unworthy of wielding Mjolnir after learning a secret from Nick Fury. Although Thor initially attempts to reclaim the hammer, he eventually relinquishes the name and role after seeing Jane wield its power. Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters on May 6, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
