Yellowstone is soon returning for its fifth season, and its stars are excited about the plot as the main character John Dutton becomes governor of Montana. In interviews with Variety during the New York premiere of the new season, the cast talked about their characters, as well as their fans, especially the ones who are celebrities. This part of the discussion was prompted by Chris Pratt dressing up as Yellowstone heartthrob Rip Wheeler for Halloween.
Is Chris Pratt going to be on the show? The real Rip Wheeler (now Rip Dutton after the season four finale), Cole Hauser, was amenable to the idea, referring to Chris Pratt’s talent as an actor and suggesting that showrunner Taylor Sheridan would be happy to cast the actor in a guest role. In his Halloween tweet, Chris Pratt certainly looks ready to take on cowboy duties at the Yellowstone Ranch.
Some of the other cast members had their own celebrities they wanted to work with. Wes Bentley, who plays prodigal son Jamie Dutton, expressed interest in working again with Lady Gaga after a positive experience filming American Horror Story. Gil Birmingham, who plays Chief Thomas Rainwater, thought Meryl Streep would be a good fit, and Monica Dutton actress Kelsey Asbille wants to pull Harrison Ford through time from his role in the spin-off 1923.
The new season promises even more intrigue and conspiracy as John Dutton takes control of the politics of his home state, working on the Machiavellian task of protecting his ranch by any means necessary. When last we left the Dutton clan, Kelly Reilly’s Beth was blackmailing Jamie over the death of his biological father, while also basking in the afterglow of her nuptials to Rip and informal adoption of the teenaged Carter. Meanwhile, outside forces are trying to buy the Yellowstone Ranch through nefarious means to build a new resort town right in the Duttons’ backyard.
Previously, the Duttons held a lot of power in the state, with Jamie as the Attorney General and Casey, played by Luke Grimes, serving as Livestock Commissioner. The ascension of John to the governor of Montana on the heels of the departure of some-time lover Lynelle Perry, portrayed by Wendy Moniz, gives the Duttons more authority than ever before, especially with Jamie so tightly under Beth’s control. While this should give the investors some wariness, it also changes the relationship between the Yellowstone Ranch and Chief Thomas Rainwater, who has been fighting to reclaim the Dutton land for the Native Americans that once populated Paradise Valley.
The new season is launching with a two-hour premiere on Paramount Plus on November 13, 2022 and will be split into two segments of 7 episodes each. Fans can catch up on the other four seasons by subscribing to Peacock. A spin-off series called 1883 depicted the events that lead the first Duttons to what would become the Yellowstone Ranch, and two other spin-offs, 1923 and 6666, are also in development.
Even without Chris Pratt, Yellowstone fans have a lot to look forward to, and it isn’t out of the question that the Guardians of the Galaxy star could make an appearance around the Yellowstone Ranch.
