See Chris Pine Argue With Odd Creature In New Trailer
The new trailer is finally here!
This article is more than 2 years old
A new trailer just dropped starring Chris Pine as a new action hero. No, he’s not commanding the USS Enterprise in this one. And no, it’s got nothing to do with Steve Trevor or Wonder Woman. No, it’s the first trailer for the long-brewing fantasy-action film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
The first thing you’re going to notice? The filmmakers are clearly trying to capture a very Guardians of the Galaxy type vibe. Instead of a beautiful and Howard Shore-esque score you might expect from your average fantasy flick, Chris Pine and his co-stars appear in the trailer with Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” rocking in the background. You can check out the trailer yourself below.
As you may notice, it isn’t just the music that gives a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe. Chris Pine’s narration tells us “truth be told, we helped the wrong person steal the wrong thing” which ends up unleashing “the greatest evil the world has ever known.” So we’ve got some quirky thieves who steal a powerful item that endangers everything. But then they have to start acting like the heroes they never intended to be? It does sound a little familiar maybe?
Though we still don’t have too many details about the plot, the trailer gives us a chance to see Chris Pine in action with Michelle Rodriguez (Furious 7), Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), and Sophia Lillis (It). Also starring are Chloe Coleman (Big Little Lies) and Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom). Hugh Grant (Love Actually) will be playing the villain, which is a role he seems to be getting offered more at this point in his career. He’s also playing the villain, hopefully some time this year, in the delayed Guy Ritchie film Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.
Just this trailer alone offers a treasure trove of Easter eggs and other references for Dungeons & Dragons fans. Players old and new will no doubt recognize the feline Displacer Beast, of course there’s the awesomely rendered Owlbear, there’s that Mimic chest, and we see the heroes leap directly into a Gelatinous Cube which is never, ever, ever a good idea. While most of the heroes appear to be human, at least one — played by Sophia Lillis — appears to be a Tiefling.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has weathered a fairly long road. Chris Pine was announced as the lead of the film a couple of years ago, with very few details about the plot released in the interim. In the meantime, the fantasy flick suffered many of the same kinds of delays lots of blockbusters have suffered ever since 2020. Believe it or not, the film was originally supposed to hit theaters a year ago this month. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it was first pushed back to November 2021 to make way for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One, which itself would be pushed back a couple of times. Then D&D was delayed to May 2022, and finally to the date announced in the trailer, March 23, 2023.
