Star Trek 4 might be as dead as Tasha Yar, but that doesn’t mean its would-be lead will spare himself from the stars. Our trusted and proven sources tell us Chris Pine will be leading the cast of Starbound, an upcoming space opera film from Disney.

In Starbound, Chris Pine will play the captain of a ragtag crew traversing the galaxy in search of a lost artifact that holds the key to saving the universe. On the face of it, it sounds like Disney wants the Wonder Woman alum to help them introduce a non-MCU replacement for the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Considering Chris Pine’s last big hit, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, it seems likely Starbound is destined to earn nicknames like “Honor Among Thieves in space.”

In Starbound, Chris Pine will play the captain of a ragtag crew traversing the galaxy in search of a lost artifact that holds the key to saving the universe.

After the fate of Star Trek 4, it’s difficult to not wonder about the chicken-and-the-egg question — did Star Trek 4‘s death open the way for Chris Pine to join Starbound, or was Starbound one of the things that killed the sequel?

The Drama Around Star Trek 4

Back in November, Zoe Saldana — who plays Lt. Uhura in the Kelvin Timeline Trek films — told Deadline that scheduling contributed to the production delay on Star Trek 4, but also cryptically referred to “something else to do with the project” being at fault. Could it be that the “something else” was related to Chris Pine being attached to a movie like Starbound?

That’s pure speculation, and frankly from the information readily available, Paramount didn’t need any help making sure Star Trek 4 went full Kobayashi Maru. Shortly after they announced that the film would be in production by the end of 2022, it was revealed that neither Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, or any of their representatives had been contacted before the announcement.

Chris Pine’s co-star Karl Urban straight up said there was no way he would be filming Star Trek 4 in 2022, because he was already committed to filming the upcoming Season 4 of The Boys through the end of that year.

In fact, it was also revealed that Paramount made the announcement without Star Trek 4 getting an official green light, a finished script, or hard numbers for a budget.

So if nothing else we know Star Trek 4 didn’t need Chris Pine getting poached for Starbound to send it crashing to the ground.

On the face of it, it sounds like Disney wants the Wonder Woman alum to help them introduce a non-MCU replacement for the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Of course with Chris Pine’s strong association with Star Trek, the Starbound filmmakers will have to do some extra work to make sure fans don’t see him as Captain Kirk pretending to be someone else.

Once we know more about Chris Pine’s upcoming film Starbound, we’ll make sure you know.
