Chris Hemsworth’s Thor 5 Already In The Works?
Chris Hemsworth might actually be back for Thor 5.
Thor: Love and Thunder recently wrapped principal photography in Sydney, Australia ahead of its 2022 release. The project was hit with significant delays due to the ongoing global pandemic but the cast and crew managed to get through it, with Chris Hemsworth sharing a photo of Thor and Korg to mark the occasion. And not long after, the focus shifted to the inevitable questions about Thor 5.
But it seems like Oscar-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi isn’t looking too far into the Marvel Cinematic Universe future just yet. In a recent interview with The Sunday Morning Herald, the director said he’s unsure if Thor 5 is on the cards. And for that reason, they decided to cram every idea they could think of for the God of Thunder in the fourth installment in the Thor franchise – even the quirky ones.
“Who knows if we do another one after this but I definitely feel like we put everything – every idea and every single ridiculous concept or gag or stunt or character – into this film. I couldn’t be happier with it.”
Waititi has developed quite the rapport with Marvel fans after his work on Thor: Ragnarok and it would be great to see him return to helm future Thor movies including Thor 5.
Thor: Love and Thunder will be the fourth solo film for the Asgardian superhero and serves as a direct sequel to its 2017 predecessor. Waititi, who also plays rock monster Korg in the film, co-wrote the screenplay with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
While the exact plot details remain scarce, it’s been confirmed that the story will focus on Jane Foster becoming the Mighty Thor. And Gorr the God Butcher will be the primary villain of the movie.
Set images have shown Thor hanging out with his Guardians of the Galaxy pals, which means that they’ve maintained their relationship after the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Natalie Portman was also spotted during filming and looked quite hero-like on set.
So does this mean that Jane Foster will take up the mantle and powers of Thor permanently?
If the story, as suggested, incorporates Jason Aaron’s run on The Mighty Thor and elements of Marvel’s 2014 Original Sin storyline (which explains how Thor lost his powers) it just might happen.
According to comic book lore, the God of Thunder becomes unworthy of wielding Mjolnir after learning a secret from Nick Fury. Although Thor initially attempts to reclaim the hammer, he eventually relinquishes the name and role after seeing Jane wield its power.
The response to Thor: Love and Thunder will probably be the biggest determining factor for the studio, in terms of Thor 5 and who will ultimately wield Mjölnir. So we’ll just have to wait and see.
Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, alongside Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. Other Marvel stars making their return are Chris Pratt, Jaimie Alexander, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn and Jeff Goldblum. Academy Award winner Christian Bale will make his MCU debut as Gorr the God Butcher. Russell Crowe also is confirmed to have a cameo appearance as Zeus, the King of the Olympians.
Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled for release on May 6, 2022.
