Chris Hemsworth Returning To Netflix For Extraction 3
Netflix has confirmed that Extraction 3 with Chris Hemsworth is in the works.
Chris Hemsworth is set to return to the megahit Russo Brothers action franchise that made him famous. That’s right, Extraction 3 is officially a go! According to Variety the Aussie action star and Extraction director Sam Hargrave teamed up at Netflix’s Tudum event Saturday to announce that a third outing for black ops mercenary Tyler Rake is in the cards.
The annual live-streamed event is Netflix‘s way of showing off some of its most anticipated upcoming shows and movies.
Along with the announcement of a third Chirs Hemsworth-led Extraction film, the event featured first looks at the streamer’s live-action One Piece adaptation, it’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation and—proving they can make live-action adaptations of comic books just as well as anime—season 2 of Heartstopper.
The Chris Hemsworth/Extraction 3 news came the same day as the premier of Extraction 2. The sequel picks up where the first Extraction left off. Tyler is convalescing after his last adventure while deciding to embark on an even crazier one.
Apparently, Netflix’s confidence in the series is so high that they didn’t need to see how well Extraction 2 performed before committing to a follow-up.
That could be because the first Extraction reached 99 million households within its first month of release. For comparison, if you converted that to 99 million movie tickets, it would be a gross of almost 1.5 billion.
And that’s not taking into account that most households have more than one member, meaning the gross might be closer to 3 billion if every viewer had to buy a ticket. In other words, an Extraction sequel starring Chris Hemsworth is probably one of the safest gambles Netflix could take.
That’s not to say that Extraction got those numbers solely from Chris Hemsworth’s name. Hemsworth’s biceps might be insanely huge, but even he couldn’t carry Netflix’s most-watched movie all by himself—not without his arms getting Thor (thank you, we’ll be here all week).
Having Marvel‘s premier directing duo, the above-mentioned Russo Brothers producing the film definitely helped.
Along with producing the Extraction series, the Avengers: Endgame directors also adapted the story for the film from the graphic novel Ciudad. Joe Russo wrote the screenplays for Extraction and Extraction 2, and there’s no reason to believe he won’t come back for Extraction 3. As impressive as those credentials are, the series’ real star—apologies to Chris Hemsworth—might be its director Sam Hargrave.
Hargrave is best known as the stunt coordinator for all of the Russo Brother’s MCU efforts. His directorial debut was 2020’s Extraction. There, he wowed audiences with a 12-minute single-shot action sequence.
For Extraction 2, Hargrave upped the ante with a 21-minute action scene that was also one long shot. At that rate, expect Extraction 3 to feature a close to 45-minute-long sequence of actiony goodness.
Netflix announced at Tudum that it identifies Extraction as a franchise and even revealed an official logo for the series.
Meanwhile, the Russo’s have discussed wanting to make other films set in the Extraction Universe that follow characters other than Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake. Apparently, one cinematic universe full of interconnected stories isn’t enough for the Russos. They need two.
We’ll be so disappointed if they don’t at least call it the ECU.
