When it comes to the box office draw of a hit movie franchise, no one may know what it takes to be successful better than actor Chris Evans. Having experienced his fair share of box office bombs in the past, but also having starred in a number of Marvel Cinematic Universe films as Captain America, Evans is a true cinematic superhero. In his upcoming Netflix effort, The Gray Man, Evans will team up with Ryan Gosling for a big budget film due to hit the streamer this July.

According to Dark Horizons, the Chris Evans-led The Gray Man may not just be a standalone film as was once projected. Directed by Evans’ Avengers: Infinity War helmers Joe and Anthony Russo, The Gray Man may eventually have a prequel and sequel attached to the order of events that this first film presents. Also as reported by The Playlist, Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been supposedly working on a prequel to the film that will deal primarily with Evans’ character of Lloyd Hansen, with a sequel in the works to the original film that will be written by one of The Gray Man’s writers, Stephen McFeely.

The Gray Man is reportedly Netflix’s most expensive film to date, per Deadline, with an overall budget of $200 million. With big names like Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling playing center stage in this thriller, the film may be destined to take over pop culture conversations this summer when it debuts. Based on the novel of the same name by Mark Greaney, the espionage thriller will feature Evans as Lloyd Hansen, an unbalanced former colleague of Gosling’s Court Gentry, who is a former CIA operative that accidentally uncovered dark secrets about the agency he works for. A manhunt for Gentry jumpstarts the action, which will take audiences to global destinations in search of the truth.

In addition to Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, The Gray Man will feature a continued cast of incredible actors. Evans’ Knives Out co-star and No Time to Die alum Ana de Armas will be playing Dani Miranda, and Bridgerton standout Rege-Jean Page will portray Denny Carmichael. Billy Bob Thornton will also appear in the film alongside Alfre Woodard, and The Matrix Resurrections actress Jessica Henwick will round out the cast.

After the box office sensation that was the Avengers series for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Russo brothers have been almost unstoppable. Joining Avengers: Endgame screenwriting collaborators Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, The Gray Man looks to be a good bet for this summer’s biggest blockbuster, even if it will mostly be seen on smaller screens. Chris Evans may be looking to the summer to break out of his Captain America persona with this film and his debut as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in Disney Pixar’s epic Lightyear, coming to theaters June 17, 2022. The Gray Man will be released to limited audiences on July 15, 2022, but will then be shown on Netflix to subscribers the following week on July 22, 2022.
