Chris Evans is going to be part of the upcoming Secret Wars event. According to our trusted and proven sources, the Captain America actor will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the future Avengers movie, which promises to be the next Avengers: Infinity War-style massive group event. This will presumably be the first appearance of Chris Evans in Marvel movies since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which will make Cap showing up in Secret Wars a pretty big deal.
About a month ago, we previously reported that Chris Evans was returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and we speculated that it would be for Secret Wars. This has turned out to be correct and will be a welcome return for one of the franchise’s earliest key players. From 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger to Avengers: Endgame, Chris Evans served as essentially the moral compass of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it will be interesting to see what part he plays in Chris Evans.
Since leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Evans has been in a number of high-profile film projects, some more successful than others. He turned in an acclaimed performance as the entitled but charismatic scion of a wealthy family in Rian Johnson’s murder mystery Knives Out, which turned his Captain America good guy image against itself. He also performed as the voice of Buzz Lightyear (taking over for Tim Allen) in Pixar’s Lightyear, which was highly promoted by Disney but ended up being one of the lowest-grossing films for Pixar.
He also appeared in Netflix’s The Gray Man with Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas, reuniting him with his former Marvel directors the Russo Brothers. The film was reportedly the streaming service’s most expensive production ever and clearly intended to be the starter of a spy thriller franchise for Ryan Gosling. Whether it will end up being that will have to be seen, though most likely Chris Evans will not be returning to the series any time soon.
Chris Evans returning for Secret Wars will make him part of a long list of former Marvel stars being wooed back by the studio. Along with Chris Evans, Marvel is looking to get back Nicolas Cage as Ghost Rider, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Wesley Snipes as Blade, and Kirsten Dunst as Mary-Jane Watson for Secret Wars. Likely, more actors who have ever appeared in any Marvel-adjacent film are in talks to be brought back for the mega-event.
This raises the possibility that Chris Evans could be in Secret Wars as both Captain America and Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch, who he portrayed in two Fantastic Four movies for 20th Century Fox. The Secret Wars movie is being promoted as the culmination of the current Multiverse Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so really anyone could show up in any capacity in the film. Chris Evans has long been one of the leading lights of Marvel, so it certainly will be good for him to show up in Secret Wars in any role.
